Toronto Blessing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
"The Toronto Blessing" is a movement that began in 1994 at the Toronto Airport Vineyard Church.
Despite the controversy surrounding the "Toronto Blessing," the leaders of the movement and the thousands that have visited the church still believe that the group is biblically based and that the manifestations come from the Holy Spirit.
It is particularly helpful in locating the Toronto Blessing in the broader context of movements that are now beging characterized as "the fire," or "revival." Also of interest is a critique of Hank Hanegraaff, Christian Research Institute, who has been very critical of the Toronto Blessing and subsequent developments.

Toronto Blessing: Was Jonathan Edwards the Father of the Toronto Movement?
Apologists for the so-called "Toronto blessing" have often appealed to the writings of the great American theologian, Jonathan Edwards (1703-58), to give an air of respectability to the experiences and manifestations which have taken place in their gatherings.
The present writer's researches have persuaded him that the attempt to claim Edwards in support of modern Toronto phenomena is deeply dishonest, and that the credibility thus gained for the Toronto blessing is wholly spurious.
Those Toronto apologists who appeal to him to justify such modern-day phenomena are either speaking out of a profound ignorance, because they have not troubled to read Edwards at all, or are irresponsibly and deceptively misrepresenting Edwards' clear and forceful teaching on the subject.

Toronto Blessing by Margaret Poloma   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The term "Toronto Blessing" is somewhat of a misnomer, having been coined by the British media after the blessing experienced at the Toronto Airport Vineyard beginning in January, 1994 was carried to Holy Trinity Brompton Anglican Church in London.
The "Toronto" or "Father's Blessing" is a bonafide new religious movement that is beginning to illustrate the stages identified by scholars (Mauss 1975).
The "Toronto Blessing" had moved a tiny local church into the international spotlight, from small rented facilities in a warehouse district to owning three large buildings, from being led by unknown "nameless and faceless" pastors to having leaders who speak at renewal meetings around the world.

 What is the Toronto blessing?
Answer: The Toronto Blessing refers to the supposed outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the people attending the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship church, which at the time was the Toronto Airport Vineyard Church.
The moniker "Toronto Blessing" was given, and the church was soon in the international spotlight.
The Toronto Blessing focuses on the latter, to the detriment of Biblical faith.

"HOLY LAUGHTER" -- "TORONTO BLESSING" ("New Wine" or Spiritual Deception?)
One church in particular, the Toronto Airport Vineyard, has become the church to which pastors from throughout the world now flock to experience this "new wine," which they in turn "bring back" to their churches.
This phenomena is now popularly referred to as the "Toronto Blessing" (hereafter TB).
Those who have received "holy" laughter or the "Toronto Blessing" may be experiencing demon-oppression, or they may be experiencing the fruits of emotionalism, but they are definitely not experiencing the Holy Spirit.

 TORONTO BLESSING
It is often proclaimed by leaders of the Toronto Blessing that speaking against the "movement" is akin to being against the "move of God" and thus one who does so is in danger of committing the unpardonable sin.
Supporters of the Toronto Blessing frequently refer to phenomenon that occurred in the First Great Awakening in America (1735-1745) to legitimize their "revival." They equate what is going on in the Toronto Blessing with what happened during the Great Awakening.
Supporters of the Toronto Blessing consistently miss the point, however, and intimate (declare actually) that Edwards himself approved of the laughing, barking, etc. Such is far from the truth.

The "Toronto Blessing" is not a unique phenomenon; it is part of a larger movement that traces its origin to the ministries of Claudio Friedzon and Rodney Howard-Browne.
Perhaps reflecting these personal changes, 71 percent reported that the "Toronto Blessing" had a positive impact on their churches, with only 10 percent saying that the response of their church community to the Blessing was a "negative" one.

Finally, if the Toronto Blessing is ordered to the building up of a trans-denominational church authority, as some of its leaders suggest, then it is incompatible with Catholic truth and unity.

 The Toronto Blessing Examined
When I have been in meetings that were styled after the Toronto Blessing meetings, it seemed it was the volume of noise that mattered; loud clapping and shouting, apparently, was required to assure that the Holy Spirit would "show up." The Holy Spirit is not a toy to be played with, controlled, or manipulated.
However, some of the leaders of the Toronto Blessing and Kansas City Prophets are said to be able to knock people over, even at considerable distances, by a flick of their hands.
The Toronto Blessing style meetings are sometimes likened to a party presided over or hosted by a "Holy Ghost Bartender," that is, the preacher or prophet.

While the Toronto Blessing experiences put a person on the floor, cause physical contortions, and epileptic type symptoms, Biblical examples of encounters with the real God and His Spirit show quite a different scenario.
This Biblical example is contrary to the "anointing" of Holy Laughter or the Toronto Blessing in which people are put to the floor and weakened with some sort of sensual experience for hours.

In fact the very fact that this "blessing" has not been confined to any particular group in spite of our terrible divisions is perhaps a sign of its genuineness. There are some signs of a growing unity, where churches and groups that have separately discovered the same phenomena are having joint meetings, particularly amongst leaders.

The outbreak of the first 'Canadian Blessing' in 1948 was prophetically declared to be a harbinger of the Second Coming, and a preparation move to usher in the "manifested sons of God" who would "harvest the grain".
The outbreak at Toronto Airport Vineyard can be traced back to involvement of the Arnotts with people influenced by Howard-Browne (as well as their long-term association with another [former] Toronto resident, Benny Hinn).
The popularity of the Blessing should see a rapid growth after this turnaround in direction, despite the fact that Wimber himself, after a long fight with cancer, is now confined to a wheelchair since being crippled by a stroke in January 95.

The Toronto Blessing derived from the ministry of Rodney Morgan Howard-Browne, a charismatic preacher from South Africa, was born June 12, 1961
Physical manifestations (shaking, laughing, jerking, crying, prostration, jumping, rolling, inebriated in the spirit, resting in the spirit, “birthing,” speaking in tongues, roaring, shouting, barking) are understood as Blessings coming from the Holy Spirit and are simply the external manifestation of internal blessings that are going on inside the person.
Others argue that the "Toronto Blessing" is a genuine manifestation of God's Holy Spirit, in which people are receiving healing, joy, peace, and faith.
