  Torpedo - LoveToKnow 1911
The stem orifice had a water-tight cover, which was removed on the torpedo being placed in the tube and the inner door closed; then, sufficient impulse being imparted to eject the torpedo, and its machinery being set in motion at the same time, it darted forward towards the enemy.
She entered the bay at night, and first discharged her bow torpedo at the ironclad, which missed; she then fired a broadside torpedo, which struck and exploded against the bow of the "Aquidaban." It caused a great shock on board, throwing an officer on the bridge into the water.
Tactics for torpedo attack in such circumstances have not therefore been laid down, and it is only necessary to consider the positions which are advantageous for the use of this weapon, and, conversely, what should be avoided when a vessel, finding herself overmatched in gunnery, seeks to redress the balance with torpedoes.

Torpedoes could be launched from tubes aboard vessels of various sizes, including the new, highly touted but ineffectual torpedo boats.
The British perfected the spar torpedo where an electronically fired explosive charge was placed on the end of a forty foot long spar that projected ten feet under water outward from the hull of the "attacking" vessel.
The torpedo required the development of counter-measures, caused an alteration of tactics, and was useful as a weapon of terror.

Torpedoes are weapons that may be launched from submarines, surface ships, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, and from unmanned naval mines.
They are also used as parts of other weapons; the Mark 46 torpedo used by the United States becomes the warhead section of the ASROC (Anti-Submarine ROCket) and the Captor mine uses a submerged sensor platform that releases a torpedo when a hostile contact is detected.
The three major torpedoes in the US Navy inventory are the Mark 48 heavyweight torpedo, the Mark 46 lightweight and the Mark 50 advanced lightweight.

 USS Bowfin - Torpedo Tubes
Torpedo tubes on U.S. submarines in World War II were basically large naval guns that used compressed air rather than explosives to eject their projectiles.
One marked difference between any torpedo tube and a gun is that the torpedo itself is self-propelling; the tube generally supplies only the initial impetus for the torpedo.
The gyro angles in all torpedoes in one nest of torpedo tubes are set by the gyro setting indicator-regulator, shown at left.

When the torpedo is released, action of the lanyard and toggle trips the starting lever, but a water trip delay valve serves to prevent the combustion flask from lighting off until water entry.
To drive the torpedo through the water, this thrust must be taken from the propeller shafts and applied to the shell of the torpedo.

 Torpedo Boats
The development of German torpedo boats of World War II was centered around the classic concept of using those kind of ships similar to World War I. The key idea was to execute torpedo attacks on other, bigger surface vessels as it was done during the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
While the first new torpedo boats build after World War I were basically small destroyers with an adequate mix of artillery and torpedo armament, those designs build in the mid 1930s were totally focused on torpedo attacks.
The Torpedo boats were used in several different ways, for escort duty, mine laying, surface patrols or U-boat training, of the 51 ships build, only 12 survived the war.

Aiming information is transmitted from the Torpedo Data Computer (see TDC) located in the Conning Tower, and is dialed into the gyro system by means of a shaft or spindle that engages a square socket on the side of the torpedo.
Because torpedoes can turn through more than 90 degrees after launching and because torpedoes can be launched from either end of the boat it is possible to shoot in any direction without changing the submarine's course.
