Torpex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Torpex is composed of 42% RDX, 40% TNT and 18% aluminium.
Torpex proved to be particularly useful in underwater munitions because the aluminium component had the effect of making the explosive pulse last longer, which enhanced the destructive power.
Torpex was developed at Royal Gunpowder Factory, Waltham Abbey, in the UK as a more powerful military alternative to TNT.

Dutch Submarines: The torpedoes and mines of the Dutch submarine service
Torpex is attractive because of the increased explosive energy and higher detonation velocity of RDX as compared to TNT and the prolongation of the pressure wave by the aluminium.
On a weight basis, Torpex is conservatively estimated to be about 50% more effective than TNT as an underwater explosive against ships.
In the late 1940s Torpex was replaced by HBX, then H-6 in the 1960s and by PBX in the 1970s.

Since this collier appeared to be about the same size as the one we sank the other day we had decided to hit her with a TNT war head to see if we could obtain a comparison.
Although at first glance this would appear to be just over a twenty percent failure, we must consider also the additional expenditure of torpedoes involved, for a target worth sinking remains worth sinking as long as she is afloat.
As it turned out, a new 5,973 ton ship was only damaged and two additional torpedoes had to be expended under unfavorable conditions in an attempt to sink her and to preserve a new found "hunting ground".

The crew of two, Lt Joe Kennedy (pilot), and Lt. Wilford John Willy (radio control technician/co-pilot), were to take off with 21,150 lbs of Torpex in 347 boxes and establish radio control of the Liberator by a Ventura mother-ship.
Once full control was established and tested, at a pre-determined point the crew would parachute from the aircraft through the nose wheel bay emergency exit and the bomber would continue the rest of its mission under radio control, finally crashing onto the target.
The cause of the explosion is believed to be a lack of electrical shielding on "Block" which caused electromagnetic emissions to open up a relay solenoid that should have been closed.

Hedgehogs detonated only upon direct contact with the targeted sub, or with the seafloor in the case of a miss.
In 1943, the U.S. Navy started packing depth charges and hedgehogs with a new explosive called Torpex, which was 50% stronger than the previously used Trinitrotoluene (TNT).
They were launched in a salvo, or cluster, 24 at a time, from spiked fittings that gave the launcher a hedgehog-like appearance.

Ahoy - Mac's Web Log-USS Mount Hood Explodes at Manus 10th. of November 1944-
Torpex filled depth bombs were being hoisted onboard.
Enemy action was ruled at as a cause of this disaster, the most probable reason for the explosion appears to have been rough handling of ammunition being loaded or unloaded, and it seems likely that the accident was caused by the detonation of Torpex filled Depth bombs being loaded into number 4 and 5 holds.
The official inquiry ruled out enemy action as the reason for Mount Hood's destruction, it does seem that careless handling of a torpex filled depth bomb was the real culprit for this terrible accident, destroying a ship only 4 months old with a great loss of life.

The idea for the exercise came as Commander, Submarine Group 7 personnel were trying to obtain accurate on-site performance projections for ADCAP torpedoes in support of the Korean Peninsula Defense Plan.
They started looking at the feasibility and value of conducting an open ocean torpedo exercise (TORPEX) in Korean waters.
The exercise depended on the weather conditions in that area, where the fleets of fishing boats operating out of Pohang and Pusan would be and locating the fishing nets and buoy lines that could also be a potential nuisance.
