  Plymouth, Torpoint Ferry
In January 1790, in the reign of King George III, the Carew and St Aubyn families obtained an Act of Parliament for a ferry from Torpoint to Morice Town on the Devon shore.
The width of the Hamoze at the point where the ferry was to be established was stated to be 2,550 feet at high water or 2,110 feet at low water.
In November 1922 the Torpoint Ferry was acquired by Cornwall County Council under the provisions of the Ferries (Acquisition by Local Authorities) Act 1919, which received the Royal Assent on December 23rd 1919.

Torpoint itself is a small Cornish town situated on the Rame Peninsula in south-east Cornwall.
In 1700 Torpoint did not exist but, with the building of the naval dockyard at Devonport, it grew rapidly, with workers there choosing to live across the river near the ferry.
The Torpoint Ferries are one of the main transport links between Devon (Plymouth) and Cornwall (Torpoint).

Torpoint   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Torpoint sits comfortably on the western side of the tidal Tamar, mainly on sunny south-facing slopes, sheltered from much of the Channel weather by the Rame peninsula.
Indeed, Torpoint is one of the more invisible towns in Cornwall; it is a dominant feature of the scene viewed from across the water in Devonport, but only a handful of Cornish houses have a clear view of the town.
Torpoint lies between two of these, Thanckes Lake to the north and the cove of the former Carbeile tidal mill, off St John’s Lake, to the south-west.

The ferry is operated in conjunction with the Tamar Bridge as a single business unit under powers derived from primary legislation - the Tamar Bridge Acts, and operation, maintenance and improvement of both crossings is funded solely from combined toll income.
Vouchers are available on board the ferries and at the ferry office at Torpoint.

BBC Online - Devon - News - larger more modern ferries for the Tamar crossing at Torpoint
This once sedate form of travel is now an economic necessity, and delays of up to an hour at peak periods have resulted in the ferry companies decision to introduce the new 'super ferries' which are capable of carrying up to 73 cars each.
The new ferries will be able to carry lorries of up to 44 tonnes, more than twice the capacity of the present vessels, raising fears of Euro 'super lorries' choking Torpoint's narrow streets.
A financial deal has yet to be struck but the new ferries are expected to be leased over 20 years at a cost of £1m a year.

Torpoint is such a poor backwater, none of the boy racers actually have cars, instead they just get the bus everywhere, to their jobs in Plimuff so that they can go down the Fokkinlightsanat and get fokked.
