Torque steering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Torque steering is an effect in front wheel drive cars caused by large amounts of torque affecting steering in such a way as to make the front wheels "squirm" (oscillate) from side to side under heavy acceleration, noticeable to the driver by the steering wheel being tugged back and forth by the wheels.
Torque steer is mainly caused by uneven half shafts between the transaxle and wheels.
Torque steer can also be caused when the steering axis of the wheel does not pass through the center of the contact point, where the tire meets the ground; i.e.

 U.S. Patent: 5020616 - Power steering apparatus - June 4, 1991
When the driver of a vehicle operates the steering wheel so as to steer the vehicle to the right or left from its neutral or straight-running state, the steerable wheels are subjected to resistive forces acting thereon from the road surface in the direction to resist the steering motion of the driver.
The power steering apparatus illustrated is of a so-called safety steering wheel structure which is adapted to absorb any excessive impact acting on a steering wheel in the axial direction of a steering column for protecting the driver of a vehicle in the event of a collision.
The torque sensor 4 for detecting steering torque comprises a sleeve 40 which is loosely fitted over the output shaft 12b, and a potentiometer installed on the sleeve 40 in such a manner that it provides an output voltage which varies with the amount of relative displacement between the input and output shafts 12a, 12b.

When the steering wheel is turned, the oil flow is divided in the Flow-amplifier in such a way as to ensure that the necessary oil flow is led to the steering system.
Via a steering column the steering unit is connected to the steering wheel of the vehicle.
When the steering wheel is turned, oil is directed from the steering system pump via the rotary valve and rotary meter to the cylinder ports L or R, depending on the direction of turn.

Steering wheel torque-based detection of misalignment of a vehicle's steering system - Patent 6574539
A steering wheel torque sensor generates a wheel torque signal indicative of the torque applied to the steering wheel by the driver.
The predetermined limit to the Steering Wheel Torque Sensor signal is a value such that significant or objectionable driver effort is required to induce a torque at the steering wheel when the vehicle is traveling in a straight line.
If the Steering Wheel Torque (22) is substantially beyond zero, the driver is imputing a torque to the steering wheel in order to travel in a straight line, and thus there may be a misalignment condition in the vehicle (10).

 Electric Power Steering
Inputs from the steering sensor are digested by a microprocessor control unit that also monitors input from the vehicle's speed sensor.
If the steering wheel is turned and held in the full-lock position and steering assist reaches a maximum, the control unit reduces current to the electric motor to prevent an overload situation that might damage the motor.
The NSX electronic steering control unit is capable of self-diagnosing faults by monitoring the system's inputs and outputs, and the driving current of the electric motor.

Of course my torque settings in the struts etc. may have been set slightly on the loose side, it was checked once before in examining the occaisional thud others have had so nothing was real loose, but they did not tighten to the new factory specs on that visit.

 Electronic Power Steering
A "steering sensor" is located on the input shaft where it enters the gearbox housing.
The steering sensor is actually two sensors in one: a "torque sensor" that converts steering torque input and its direction into voltage signals, and a "rotation sensor" that converts the rotation speed and direction into voltage signals.
The electronic steering control unit is capable of self-diagnosing faults by monitoring the system's inputs and outputs, and the driving current of the electric motor.

Electric power steering control apparatus - usptntsrv
A road surface reaction torque detector has a low-pass filter element whose time constant is determined in accordance with a vehicle speed that is detected by a vehicle steed detector and a motor rotation speed that is detected by a motor rotation speed detector.
A road surface reaction torque estimation value is obtained in such a manner that the road surface reaction torque detector performs low-pass filter processing on steering shaft reaction torque signal that is outputted by a steering shaft reaction torque signal outputting means.
Among conventional electric power steering control apparatus is one disclosed in JP-A-2001-239951 in which one or more stages of first-order low-pass filters are formed to estimate road surface reaction torque and the time constants of the low-pass filters are arranged in accordance with the steering speed.

I get the impression that torque steer is a catch-all term for anything that might transmit force back to the driver through the steering mechanism during acceleration.
Suppose for example that the steering axis, that axis about which the wheel is turned in steering, did not pass through the center of the contact patch between the tire and the road.
Possibly the steering axis shifts a bit during acceleration and that shift is mitigated by the added stiffness of a short shaft.
