  The legendary torqueflite automatic transmission
The TorqueFlite transmission was Chrysler's mainstay from its introduction in 1956 through the early 1990s, remaining in duty in modified form (for front wheel drive) through 2001 in the Neon, and continuing even today with electronic controls for trucks.
TorqueFlite has proved to be so dependable that there are no recommendations for band adjustments, clutch friction material replacement, or transmission fluid or fluid filter changes under normal conditions.
With TorqueFlite, no band adjustments are recommended-and there are no recommendations for changing the transmission fluid and fluid filter: Chrysler, through the years, has been so convinced of TorqueFlite's engineering superiority that it uses the same basic design from its lowest priced compact car to the highest priced New Yorker Brougham.

TorqueFlite was introduced on the heels of the company's two-speed PowerFlite automatic, which made its debut in 1954.
TorqueFlite was an available option or standard equipment, depending on model and year, on all Chrysler products (Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial) and on various American Motors (AMC), Jeep, Maserati Quattroporte, Monteverdi [1] and Bristol [2] brand vehicles as well.

The Torqueflite is shifted automatically into second gear by a governor signal pushing the 1-2 shift valve over and allowing line pressure to be directed to the front servo-kickdown band assembly and to the accumulator.
The Torqueflite is designed in such a way to give relatively slow, soft shifts; and the 2-3 shift is the one I think needs the most improvement.
Advantage number one to Torqueflite modification is elimination of the 2-3 shift overlap which gives a crisp, efficient shift from second to third, prolonging the friction material life.

Hang a gauge on a Torqueflite and you'll see a lot of REVERSE pressure and you'll see it quickly when you move that selector.

Since i overhauled some Torqueflites i always had some problems with the "forced kickdown" (or forced downshift 3-2 or 2-1 or 3-1).
Generally it does not function properly and one depresses in vain on the accelerator, the car does not downshift..
After this adjustement, if the pedal is released you'll see that the throttle lever doesn't bottomed on "idle" stop (like 1b pic) but rather at an intermediate position between 1b and 2b So if you follow the FSM manual with throttle lever on "idle stop" you never go to KD position.

Btw I would love the value of fuel that all the torqueflite's have absorbed over the years - not saying that the ZF's are efficient but an old 2dr classic auto on carbs just couldnt bear the temptation of visiting every petrol station in sight !
As everyone probably knows who has one if you are in third and engage the overdrive button solenoid at say 60mph your revs drop as O/D is engaged.

Being used as it was in Chrysler's revered luxury and muscle cars, the TorqueFlite continued to be used in RWD Chryslers for many years.
Rear drive stayed in the trucks, but eventually it became necessary to have an overdrive top gear, and the newer 4-speed automatics were the end of the Torqueflite.

Add to this the savings in wear you get from slowing the engine down, how much nicer and quieter it is in the truck while cruising and you start to understand that it really doesn't cost anything in the long run to own the Gear Vendors.
If and when you decide to trade off the vehicle you will find that a used torqueflite kit on ebay command over 50% of its original cost or take it with you to the new truck by using our factory exchange program.

I've been racing 426 Chrysler hemi's since 1965 and I always do my own work including rebuilding the 727 Torqueflite.

This is a reasonable introduction to the Torqueflite tranny.
However I recomend doing at least one standard torqueflite rebuild before venturing into some of the modifactions that are shown in the book.
The torqueflite is one of the easist automatics to overhaul and a very durable transmission.

In fact, the TorqueFlite's "kick-down" is more akin to the TV-linkage on late-model automatic overdrive transmissions, which also don't have vacuum modulators.
The only way around this is to go to a full-race reverse-shift-pattern manual valvebody that's set up to have full line pressure at all times.
