The school's mascots are the "Tartars", a Mongolian warrior.
The school first opened as the area's first Los Angeles School District school on September 11, 1917 as a combination high school and elementary school to accommodate the area's rapid post-war growth brought on by its petroleum industry and iron works as well as the Pacific Electric Railway.
Torrance High School became part of the Redondo Union High School District in 1947.

On the one occasion I can recall that we went to Torrance beach, we were doing a little slap and tickle on the sand, when she noticed the slim gold chain around her neck was gone.

Today, two high-performing Southland high school seniors – with an aptitude for cars – were honored as recipients of the 2005 Vic and Nancy Edelbrock Scholarships.
South Torrance High School’s Thomas Butler and Colin Rosenberg were introduced as the winners of the scholarships that honor the Edelbrock President & CEO and his wife, Nancy, who is on the company’s Board of Directors.

The West High Girls Soccer team continued it's unbeaten streak at home in the first round of the CIF Playoffs.
The Warriors were finally feeling a little better, finally returning to West High to play only their second home game of the season.
After school fitness will commence on Wednesday October 5, and we will be giving the girls the option of doing this fitness on Wednesday or Tuesday of every week.

 Kimo's Pole Vault Site - Pictures and Links
It was once said to me that "pole vaulters, as a rule, are a few bricks short of a load".
The list of vaulters coached by Bill is extensive, but the most memorable ones are Tom Hinthaus (won the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials), Dave Kenworthy (won the 1982 NCAA meet), John Switzer, and Greg Woopse.
He just happened to move two blocks from the Torrance High School track during my fledgling years as a beginning vaulter, and the rest is history.
