Carlos Torre - Anthony Santasiere, Dimock Theme Tournament, New York 1924
Torre's exchange sacrifice clearly falls under the category of "real sacrifices," for it does not gain anything immediately other than the disruption of Black's King's field and, therefore, a chance to attack.
Torre may have thought the idea was worthwhile for nothing more than its psychological effect.
White's Queen attacks powerfully along the long diagonal and is well positioned to move over to the kingside along the third rank, so it is now too late for Black to return the pawn in order to mobilize his forces.

Study participants with a history of heart attack were 80 percent more likely to have impaired cochlear function than those who had not had a heart attack.
Women with a history of heart attack were 2.7 times more likely to have impaired cochlear function than women who had not reported a previous heart attack.
Torre says this cross-sectional study provides preliminary evidence of an association between cardiovascular disease and abnormal cochlear function, particularly for women with a history of heart attack.

The Gambit Guide to the Torre Attack
This is a critical try, because the move Bg5 removes the bishop from the defense of this pawn, and the Torre's rejection of an early c2-c4 means that white also does not have defenses of the pawn with the queen other than the somewhat passive Qc1.
I can understand why some fl players have viewed this as an acid test: often the white Torre player is perceived to be a solid (if not passive) player, and white must act forcefully to show his compensation for the gambited pawn in these lines.
This is clearly one of the key battlegrounds in the Torre, and the author doesn't skimp on its coverage.

He came looking to box and use a double jab to set up combinations but he was extremely tired a this point and had little choice but to trade with Ortiz when rushed and the 2 met in the middle of the ring again to unload their with punishing blows.

The Gambit Guide to the Torre Attack
The Torre Attack is a very attractive system for White as it allows him/her to set the agenda from the outset, preventing many counterattacking systems.
It has quick-strike potential if Black is careless or unfamiliar with the subtleties."A couple of books dealing with the Torre came out early in the nineties, but this superb work by Burgess surpasses them.
The Torre is a very flexible set-up and gives White good chances of having a pleasant initiative after 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 e6 with 3 Bg5.

I have stumbled onto the Torre Attack and have used it effectively on occasion against stronger players.
Each of these are separate lines in the Torre, and in my mind, both are much more active for fl than e6.
And if the problem is that you are missing tactics that are winning your pieces, this can be fixed by going over the "white to play and win" type of books...there are tons of them out there.

Torre must have had a concrete reason for not taking the pawn and I think you nailed it.
21 b4 and Qf5 are based on general considerations: Black is trying to stop White`s dangerous K side attack and needs his queen to be near the action (it is the only piece that can come to the help of the king).
She wrote to let him know that a play he had been working on for many years was finally going to be published.

Anthony Santasiere - Carlos Torre, Dimock Theme Tournament, New York 1924
But the Queen move is poorly considered, since it allows White to weaken Black's pawns and his castled position, after which White will have good targets of attack and a certain initiative.
Likely Torre completely underestimated Santasiere's chances of developing an attack on the Kingside with Queens off the board.
Santasiere's attack on Torre's damaged kingside pawns is quite similar and brings about the same result.

The current move for White here (as given by, ironically, IM Andrew Martin on his new DVD on the Trompowsky) is the solid 3.e3., which Cox seems to concur with as the best move as he says it scores better in his database than does 3.e4.
The Torre Attack had an undeservedly poor reputation for many years because most of the opening theory consisted of games in which lower-rated players tried it against higher-rated opposition in an attempt to avoid opening theory.
Mark Hebden was by no means the first to play the move, but he and the late Tony Miles have been far and away the most devoted GM practitioners, so I’m going to name it after him.

Anand quickly regrouped his forces to stop Morozevich?s onslaught and later won another piece to turn the game decisively in his favour.
