 PROJECT BACKGROUND
In Venezuela, the Torrent duck is distributed from the northern part of the state of Mérida to southwest Táchira.
The torrent duck lays 2 dull buff eggs with possibly the longest incubation period in the Anatidae family (Scott 1954, Gomez-Dallmeier’s and Cringan 1989, Callaghan 1998).
Due to the fact that the Torrent duck is a species locally distributed in restricted areas, its populations will naturally consist of only a few individuals, putting the total population of this species in Venezuela between a minimum of 100 and a maximum of 1500 individuals (Rodríguez and Rojas-Suárez 1999).

The western harlequin duck breeds from northeast Siberia across to arctic Canada, throughout most of Alaska and British Columbia, and sparsely in the Rocky Mountain region of the U.S. as far south as California.
Harlequins are one of a few unrelated duck species throughout the world that have become “river specialists.” During the breeding season, the South American torrent duck, New Zealand blue duck, African fl duck, and harlequin seek rapidly flowing streams and rivers for nesting and rearing young.
Harlequins are better able than other ducks to contend with strong currents, spending a greater proportion of their foraging time under water among current-swept rocks and boulders.

A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF RECENT DABBLING DUCKS (TRIBE ANATINI) BASED ON COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY
Salvadori's Duck (Sal- vadorina [Anas] waigiuensis) was included in Anas by Delacour and Mayr (1945), but earlier au- thors placed it in a separate subfamily Merga- nettinae with Merganetta (Salvadori 1895, Phil- lips 1926), and others retained it as a monotypic genus of problematic relationships (Mayr 1931, Peters 1931, Kear 1975).
Within the Pacific complex, the Philippine Duck (A. luzonica) is the sister-group to a terminal clade in which the Pacific Gray Duck (A. superciliosa) is the sister-group to the spot-billed ducks, here considered to comprise two species (A. poecilorhyncha and A. onorhyn- cha).
The classification of A. querquedula with the blue-winged ducks rested largely on the gray forewing of the species, a character that differs from the less extensive, powder-blue forewing of Spatula and that evidently was de- rived from the light gray wing-coverts of the green-winged and spotted teals.

Perching duck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The perching ducks ("Cairininae" or "Cairinini") were previously treated as a small group of ducks in the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae, grouped together on the basis of their readiness to perch high in trees.
It has been subsequently shown that the grouping is paraphyletic and their apparent similarity results from convergent evolution, with the different members more closely related to various other ducks than to each other (Livezey 1986).

Between July 1993 and December 1994, we estimated the population size of the Torrent Duck at the Ucumarí Regional Natural Park, characterized its habitat, and described some aspects of its feeding habits and diet.
The diet of the Torrent Duck, determined from examination of feces, was dominated by immature aquatic insects, particularly Trichoptera.
Although the diet was similar in composition to that of Rainbow Trout caught in the river, the null hypothesis of complete niche overlap among these species was rejected; this discards the likelihood of interspecific competition for food between them.
