This pine is probably the remnant of an ancient coastal forest, which has been reduced during the drying period of the last ten thousand years to the sandy soils of the sandstone bluffs and ravines of Torrey Pines State Reserve and Santa Rosa Island.
The vegetation associated with the Torrey Pine woodland is a mixture of plants from the coastal sage scrub and chaparral plant communities.

Torrey Pines Reserve is near the edge of the Pacific plate, moving toward the Aleutians at about two inches per year.
The Torrey Sandstone crops out near the top of the sea cliffs and at many other locations in the reserve, for instance on the Fleming Trail, the cliffs by the main Reserve road, and in Canyon of the Swifts.
Faults crossing the Reserve are most easily seen in the beach cliffs and in the Torrey Pines grade on old Route 101.

The reserve extends 2 miles along the coast and 1 mile inland and includes a wide beach, steep sandstone cliffs and bluffs that are eroded into unusual, intricate formations, and the undulating land on top which besides the trees has over 400 species of plants, flowers and bushes plus a fair variety of wildlife.
Some of the torrey pines are found here, though many have been lost to disease and fire in recent years.
