As fun as the hike was reaching the summits of both Grays and Torreys Peaks, it will always be remembered (for me and my hiking partners, at least) for the horrifying life-threatening lightning storm above treeline that we were trapped in as we were heading down.
Torreys Peak (11th highest in Colorado) is 14,267 ft. above sea level.

Torreys Peak is generally climbed in combination with Grays Peak from the immensely popular Stevens Gulch Trailhead to the east.
It was quite a scenic spot, with the pointed summit of Torreys towering above about two miles to the northeast, and Grizzly Peak (13,427 ft.) at the head of the valley to the northwest.
We were greeted by grand views all around, especially of Grays Peak beyond the saddle to the south.

Torreys Peak is located in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains near Frisco.
Torreys ranks 11th highest in elevation of the Colorado 14ers.
Looking over at Grays Peak we could see about 12-15 people on or near the summit but it didn't look like anyone was crossing the saddle to climb Torreys too.

I intended to climb these peaks on the snowy day that I climbed Mount Bierstadt, but I was foiled by a wrong turn.
My goal was to ascend Torreys Peak via Class 3-4 Kelso Ridge (northeast), climb Grays Peak via the Torreys/Grays saddle, and finally return via the well-maintained Grays Peak trail.
Perhaps the most interesting views were of the Indian Peaks, to the northeast, and particularly the Arapaho Peaks.

Needless to say, although there were tons of people on the trail (in the valley) to Grays and Torreys Peaks, once I got up on the flank of Kelso Mountain, the only being I encountered was a goat with whom I had to share the summit.

 GORP - The history behind Grays and Torreys Peak in Colorado's Rocky Mountains
In 1861, Charles C. Parry, a student and coworker of Torrey and Gray who was destined to become an eminent botanist in his own right, climbed the higher peaks of the Front Range and took altitude readings.
Locally, Torreys Peak became known as Irwins Peak, while Baker gave his name to the little town of Bakerville, and Kelso replaced Engelmann's name with his own on Kelso Mountain.
The names of Torreys, Grays, and Irwins peaks changed back and forth until 1872, when visits by Parry, Gray, and Torrey to the peaks helped to establish Grays as the eastern summit and Torreys as the western summit.

After four peaks the previous day (the Decalibron), it was off to the Georgetown area to hike up to Grays Peak and then Torreys Peak.
You are in a large, fairly deep basin, with a creek and rocky ridge of mountains to your east and south, and the grassy slopes of Kelso Mountain to your west.
Eventually, you are able to get great views of Grays and Torreys, with Torreys always looking more menacing and taller than Grays from every angle.

Because of it's northern presentation, there were patches of snow and ice on and off on the way up, and I was glad to have the ice axe for traverses and descent.
I moved on toward a nearby thirteener [Edwards peak, I think] but by this time I was feeling pretty bad -- you other flatlanders know what I mean.
I've made it a practice to go for some peaks any time I'm in the area -- all this is to encourage you other flatlanders who pass through Colorado on tight schedules.

The trailhead is approximately ten miles west and south of Georgetown, CO. Exit the Bakerville exit from Interstate 70 and drive approximately 3.5 miles to the trailhead up the Stevens Gulch Road.
Torreys Peak is generally climbed in conjunction with Grays Peak.
A rather stable route from Grays to Torreys is to descend the pack trail about four switchbacks and then cut over to Torreys rather than plunging directly off the summit of Grays.

It is a 1,200 foot couloir, averaging somewhere around 40 to 45 degrees, that splits the east face of the 14,000 foot Torreys Peak.
On the descent to the Grays / Torreys saddle, we noticed some pretty big cornices ready to break loose and tumble down the east face of Torreys Peak.
As we got back to the base of Torreys Peak, we could see a party of seven about 1/3 of the way up the Dead Dog.

After three hours, we stood on the summit of the 9th highest peak in Colorado and the highest on the continental divide in the United States.
Torreys looks much higher than Grays to me but actually is a few feet shorter.
These are two relatively easy peaks but as usual in Colorado, you must be prepared for any kind of weather conditions.

Many people zipped right past us; some sort of hiked nearby; others did even more sitting on the side of the trail than we did, or gave up entirely and were headed back to the trailhead.
I went on ahead and climbed Torreys, then met Dennis on the summit of Grays.
The section of trail between the Grays - Torreys split in the trail and the saddlle between the two had been rebuilt recently, adding about 50 feet of climb.

Reviewing the list of peaks close to Denver, I decided to try the “mountaineer’s route”; on Torreys: the peak’s north ridge.
I studied the ridge, studied it some more, then started off, having decided that failure on the ridge wouldn’t necessarily spell failure on the peak: in the event the ridge turned me back, I would have a pretty decent chance of retreating to the trail, and climbing via the more pedestrian route.
One had two peaks to his credit — Grays and Torreys, both done that morning — and the other had those two peaks, plus Capitol and Longs.

These two well-known peaks are connected by a short ridge and are just barely far enough apart and different enough to qualify as separate fourteeners.
Until the new elevations published by USGS in July, Torreys was thought to be only 14,267 feet high, and Grays was thought to be 14,270 feet.
This is a shot looking back at the peak of Torreys from the saddle between the two peaks.

The peak is usually climbed the same day as Torrey Peak.
Usually Gray's Peak to the east (left) is climbed first and then the climber descends to the saddle between the two mountains and climbs the other side up Torrey.

I had traversed to this peak from Grays Peak about two years ago; not exactly the way I want to claim an ascent.
It is amazing to think about the variety of route types on this peak: hiking, climbing, and snow climbing.
The route down Torreys was so much of a contrast to the Kelso Ridge route that it seemed like a different mountain.

Having bagged Grays and Torreys last year as a pair, I still needed to revisit one of them to meet the 3000' requirement.
But here on the 30' Torreys knife, that humiliating and awkward posture just didn't feel necessary because there was plenty to grab on to to navigate across on all fours.
When I did Grays and Torreys last year, I didn't know enough to be able to pick out the mountains, so it was kind of like being treated to a brand new view yesterday.

However, Roach is certainly correct in calling the road "steep and rough but passable in most passenger cars"; it took me nearly 25 minutes to drive the 3 miles from the interstate, avoiding rocks and chuckholes.
The ridge is reached with a very short off-trail hike to the 12400 foot saddle between Torreys and Kelso Peak.
On the summit, there were several other people who had either come up Torreys by breaking off the Grays Peak Trail, or who had traversed from Grays.

The grand finale of the class is a high peak climb, and as the date for the climb neared the class began speaking of possible peaks; "longs, man, longs it is! Right up the damn north face, man!" "Mummy peak, classic climb!" "Mt. Yale, Mt. Princeton," etc..
There was talk of other peaks, but in the end we came back to Kelso.
However, obviously the time between all the autumn climbs and the planning session had made at least me forget exactly how horrible downclimbing is. Very soon after the first step we were commited to the route, as the easiest way down was over the summit.
