Torsen General Frequently Asked Questions page
The Torsen differential is simply a torque multiplier that works through the use of friction generated by thrust forces from the internal gearing.
In response to this, we developed the Torsen T-2R with pre-load to combat those wheel in the air situations.
Torsen differentials are warranted against manufacturing defects based upon a stock vehicle under normal driving conditions.

With the Torsen differential, Gleason is meeting this challenge of improving traction management in both front and rear wheel drive vehicles, all-wheel drive vehicles, and in a variety of applications of the various drives for use in cars, trucks, military vehicles, construction and utility vehicles, and racing cars.
This feature enables the Torsen differential to support a torque imbalance between drive axles which contributes to the total amount of torque which can he transferred from the engine to the drive axles when the amount of torque which can be supported in one of the drive axles is limited by available traction.
The Torsen differential resists transfers of torque between drive wheels in proportion to the torque applied to the differential housing, and this results in a larger proportion of the applied torque being delivered to the slower rotating drive wheel.

Since the Torsen differential is designed to have little or no effect on vehicle performance unless torque is being transferred by the differential, it should be understood that what is meant by the coasting mode is actually vehicle deceleration caused by engine braking.

Torsen - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-27)
Torsen, a contraction of "torque-sensing", was invented by an American company called Gleason Corporation.
The Torsen does not have a preload so some traction is necessary in order to transfer torque.
If one wheel were raised in the air, the Torsen would act like an open diff and no torque would be transferred to the other wheel.

 The Torsen in the Hummer
Obviously, I'm going to have a bias toward using the Torsen, and that would be my recommendation if the vehicle is to be used for primarily commercial purposes.
The Torsen can do 90-95% of what a locker can do off road, and with careful brake modulating, is just as effective.
We recently worked with a desert race team (running a Ford pickup), and for their purposes, they found that using Torsens in the front and rear was actually better then using the locker set up they previously had.

The Chevy SSR engine, transmission, and TORSEN differential
The TORSEN system for the SSR is a close relative to the rear differential developed for the Chevrolet Camaro and is the technology of choice for numerous racing teams.
An advanced gearing system senses torque or force feedback from a wheel that is about to slip or skid, and shifts most of the engine's power away - prior to wheel slip - to the wheel with the most traction.
The torque distributing effect of the TORSEN differential is a constant, proportional to the torque on the axle.

The Torsen (from Torque Sensing) works as an open differential when the amount of torque going to each wheel is equal.
For instance, if a particular Torsen differential is designed with a 5:1 bias ratio, it is capable of applying up to five times more torque to the wheel that has good traction.
In this application, the Torsen is superior to the viscous coupling because it transfers torque to the stable wheels before the actual slipping occurs.

The Torsen differential provides for the selection of an optimal compromise between the two primary functions of any differential, namely, transmitting power from a single power source to two drive axles (or shafts) and permitting independent rotation of the two driven axles (i.e., differentiation).
The two types of torque transfer are interrelated, and it is an important characteristic of the Torsen differential to control torque transfers between drive axles and thereby enhance the capacity of the differential to transfer an increased

Torsen Limited-Slip Differentials in a First Gen
For those not familiar with the Torsen differential, it is standard on all 3rd gens, and I believe it is available on some of the special versions of the Miata.
There are two Torsens available from Mazdatrix and Mazda Comp parts, which should fit 84-85 1st gens, and non-turbo 2nd gens.
Torsen LSDs use gears and, in some cases, thrust washers to keep power to the wheel that has the traction.

 Torsen Differentials at On-Track Performance
Zexel Torsen's TORSEN T-2 Traction Differential are ideally suited for front wheel, center box, or C-Clip rear axle applications.
TORSEN T-2 Traction Differentials are available with a biasing capability range of 1.4:1 to 3.0:1 and will fit in most standard axles without modification.
The TORSEN T-2 is an advanced, multi-function traction differential, providing continuous, uninterrupted torque output, torque biasing and differentiation in one integral unit.

 VLSD Torsen
A Torsen type LSD is an upgrade for the early unit but requires replacing the entire diff housings assembly from the later 1994-> generation cars as they are completely different units.
Torsen Type: Superior torque rating of both the diff and the ring/pinion over the early unit.
The one downside of the Torsen is that if one wheel is completely off the ground (zero traction) then the charactoristics of the Torsen will make it basically an open diff, both wheels have to have at least some traction for the unit to function properly.

Full time 4 wheel drive turbo charged cars
The TorSen is the only mechanism which acts like a differential and locking device at the same time.
The most important difference between TorSen differentials and viscous couplers is that the TorSen has a torque sensing characteristic while the VC has a rotation sensing characteristic.
That's why TorSen differentials only lock when power is applied to them whereas viscous couplers lock both when power is applied and while braking.

 Torsen Diffs?
Unless I am mistaken (and I certainly could be) a Torsen diff does not supply greater torque to the wheel with the most traction.
Now again if I am wrong and a Torsen is more than another version of limited slip (wheel with least traction still gets more torque, just not all as with open diffs) than it may be useful on high traction tight courses.
The Torsen (from Torque Sensing) works as an open differential when the amount of torque going to each wheel is equal.

A torsen will put down about 3.5 times the torque to the outside tire compared to the inside tire.
A torsen will be empty in the middle of the shafts or have a flat metal disc in there.
