Tortoiseshell cat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tortoiseshell is a coloring found in cats caused by a combination of specific genetic traits.
For a cat to be calico, it must simultaneously express both of the two genes, O and o, which are located at the same location on the X chromosome.
In normal female tortoiseshell cats and in Klinefelter males, the position of the patches depends on which X-chromosome is active in each cell and which is inactivated to become a Barr body.

Lake Van is a region of temperature extremes and the cats have evolved a coat that grows thick in the winter with a large ruff and bottlebrush tail for the harsh winters and then sheds out short in the body for the warm summers.
Originating in the Lake Van area of southeastern Turkey, these cats have been domesticated for centuries (in fact for as long as the famous Saluki Hound); they are much loved and prized by the Turks for their exceptional character and unique colouring.
Turkish Van cats are considered on of the largest of the domestic breeds and are quite massive at maturity - the only cat that cannot follow its head through a fence due to the breadth of the chest.

Male cats only inherit one X chromosome so this is active in all skin cells as there is nothing equivalent on the Y chromosome which could "switch off" the O gene.
At the other extreme, a genetically tortoiseshell cat may appear to be solid ginger or solid fl because of the way the X chromosomes activated - these cats will produce unexpected tortie kittens in appropriate matings.
