Tortolita East Biological Corridor Arizona Preserve Initiative: Would purchase 4,761 acres of State Trust Land north of Oro Valley to create a biological corridor between the Tortolita Mountains, Catalina State Park and the Coronado National Forest to protect a significant archaeological area, Upper Honey Bee Canyon and recreational areas and scenic views.
Tortolita Mountain Park Arizona Preserve Initiative: Would preserve 4,519 acres of State Trust Land within the planning area of the Tortolita Mountain Park to protect Upper Honey Bee Canyon, recreational areas, habitat for the cactus ferruginous pygmy owl, an area of high archaeological significance and scenic views.
Tortolita Trail System: Would design, construct and renovate more than 30 miles of new and existing trails in the Tortolita Mountain range and Marana's Tortolita Preserve that would include areas for wildlife observation, scenic overlooks, interpretive signs for natural-resource education and ramadas.

The principal hunting areas in the subarea are the Tortolita Mountains and the surrounding area, and the Western Catalina Mountains.
Tortolita Mountain Park has an advantage over Tucson Mountain Park in that it will probably not be bisected by roads, and motorized vehicles (other than park maintenance vehicles) will not have access to the interior of the park.
Despite the lack of broadly available public access, the Tortolita Mountains area is presently used for recreational purposes by small numbers of hikers, equestrians, mountain bicyclists, birders, geology and archeology buffs, and off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts (the OHV users generally confine their activities to the Trust Lands east and north of the park).

The basal contact of the steeply tilted Tertiary sequence north of the Tortolita Mountains is truncated laterally and downward by the Suizo Mountains and Guild Wash detachment faults.
The tiltblock north of the Tortolita Mountains is broken and distended by antithetic, northeast-dipping normal faults, including the Owl Head Butte fault.

 Geology of the Muleshoe Preserve
The geologic history exposed in the cliffs and canyons of the Galiuro Mountains reaches from the Precambrian Era, over 1.7 billion years ago, up to the present, as geologic forces continue to alter the mountains and surrounding valleys.
The Pinal Schist is composed of metamorphic rocks that were buried and deformed during an ancient mountain building episode, or orogeny, that is unrelated to the present day topography of the Galiuro Mountains.
Many other mountain ranges were built up during this period, including the Santa Catalina, Rincon and Tortolita Mountains near Tucson, and the Chiricahua Mountains to the southeast.
