ARS | Publication request: Timing of Egg Hatch by Early-Season Codling Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Predicted by ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
In addition, we found that the accuracy of this prediction can be further improved by selecting the exact start of female moth¿s sexual activity by considering the daily maximum and dusk temperatures that occur between trap checks.
Technical Abstract: Timing of moth catch in traps to predict the start of egg hatch by first generation codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in apple, Malus domestica Borkhausen (Rosaceae) was evaluated with ethyl (2E, 4Z)-2,4-decadieonate (pear ester) and (E, E)-8,10- dodecadien-1-ol (codlemone) lures.
The use of Biofix 2a for first sustained catch of female codling moth in a pear ester-baited trap had the highest degree of accuracy and precision in predicting the start of egg hatch among the various Biofix types evaluated in our study.

Communication disruptant and communication disruption method - Patent 6599500
However, in the case, for example, of communication disruptants for species belonging to the family Tortricidae and having (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate as a component of their sex pheromone composition, (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate alone has been used without regard to the other components of the sex pheromone of the species.
The communication disruptant of the present invention is effective in disrupting the communication of insect pests of the family Tortricidae and, in particular, the subfamily Tortricinae.
Unless otherwise noted, the test fields used in the examples and comparative examples were sprayed with the same dose of an insecticide for insect pests of the family Tortricidae, and two insecticide-spraying operations were omitted from a conventional pest control scheme (usually consisting of six insecticide-spraying operations).

Tortricidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tortricidae or tortrix moths are a family of the Lepidoptera.
Tortricidae is considered to be the single most important family of insects that feed on apple, both economically and in diversity of feeding found on fruit, buds, leaves and shoots.
Currently organophosphate sprays are favoured, timed carefully to catch the hatching larvae before they can bore into the fruit.

Bionomics of Codling Moth: Classification and Phylogeny   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Codling moth continues the ancestral habits of laying eggs singly and feeding exclusively in the interior of fruit, and overwintering as fully developed larvae (Chapman, 1973).
Some taxonomists believe the Tortricids (a subgroup of the family Tortricidae) should be dealt with separately from Olethreutids (another subgroup of the family Tortricidae) (Petterson, 1948; Chue, 1949).
Others include the Olethreutids in the family Tortricidae giving subfamily status to each group - the Tortricinae and Olethreutinae (Tadic, 1963; Chapman, 1971; Bradley, 1979; Razowski, 1979; Bradley, 1979; Bradley, 1979 and Stehr, 1987) (We follow the latter concept in the present paper).

The type collection of Tortricidae in the National Museum of Natural History (USNM), Smithsonian Institution, represents a significant worldwide resource for researchers interested in tortricid moths (i.e., the leafrollers).
Use of the tortricid holdings of the USNM by specialists worldwide (e.g., Richard L. Brown, John W. Brown, John B. Heppner, William E. Miller, Jerry A. Powell, Josef Razowski, and others) has continued to increase type holdings.
The specimens are arranged in alphabetic sequence by species (or subspecies) in individual, labeled unit trays and stored in 13 insect drawers in the USNM.

As a collaboration from researchers throughout the world, use of the specimens or extracts is not limited to any particular person or project as long as the project would further the understanding of relationships within the Tortricidae at any level.
It is hoped that multiple specimens from many different species will be available should different researchers request the same species for different projects.
