Tosefta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tosefta is a second compilation of oral law from the period of the Mishnah.
The Tosefta as we have it today functions like a commentary on unquoted Mishnaic material; It offers additional haggadic and midrashic material, and it sometimes contradicts the Mishnah in deciding Halakha (Jewish law), or in declaring in whose name a law was given.
The definitive commentary on the Tosefta is by Rabbi Yehezkel Abramsky: Hazon Yehezkel (24 volumes, 1925-1975 in Hebrew).

JewishEncyclopedia.com - TOSEFTA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
It does not discuss the passages in the Mishnah in a commentarial manner, and, to judge by its contents, it might be regarded either as a continuation of the Mishnah or as a work of equal rank therewith; for it cites the mishnaic passages in almost the same terms as the Mishnah itself.
To this succeeds the question of the relation of the Tosefta to the baraitot cited in Talmudic discussions; for several such baraitot are contained literally in the Tosefta, while others are paraphrased, although the redaction of the parallel passages differs in respect to important points.
In the Tosefta, however, he gave the traditional sentences in their complete form, supplementing them with explanatory notes; he gave also various cases, which in the Mishnah were represented by a single statement.

Yeshu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although Notzri does not appear in the Tosefta, by the time the Babylonian Talmud was produced, Notzri had become the standard Hebrew word for Christian and Yeshu Ha-Notzri had become the conventional rendition of "Jesus the Nazarene" in Hebrew.
In his view the tosefta account reveals that at least some Jews believed Christians were true healers, but that the rabbis saw this belief as a major threat.
The occurrence of Yeshua instead of Yeshu in certain manuscripts of the Tosefta is accompanied by anomalous spellings of Pandera and based on comparison of texts both are seen as erroneous attempts at correction by a copyist unfamiliar with the terms.

 l e a r n @ j t s LUMINARIES Pesah: A liberating experience for women   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Tosefta Pesahim 7:4 says: "A man may not slaughter a paschal lamb for his grown son or daughter, his Jewish male or female bondsman, or his wife, unless he first obtains their consent.
The difference in the legislative approach of these two codes probably reflects a division of opinion among the sages of the day about the status of women, some viewing a wife as occasionally in control of her own affairs and others as always under male domination.
What we see in all this material is that, first, on the topic of women, the rabbinic tradition speaks in many voices rather than only one, as generally thought; and, second, that the rabbis engage in results-oriented reinterpretation of earlier texts for the purpose of providing women with greater opportunities for religious satisfaction.

Saul Lieberman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He also published Tashlum Tosefta, an introductory chapter to the second edition of M. Zuckermandel's Tosefta edition (1937), dealing with quotations from the Tosefta by early authorities that are not found in the text.
He undertook the publication of the Tosefta text, based on manuscripts and accompanied by brief explanatory notes, and of an extensive commentary called Tosefta ki-Feshutah.
The latter combined philological research and historical observations with a discussion of the entire talmudic and rabbinic literature in which the relevant Tosefta text is either commented upon or quoted.

Their Tosefta was so dependent on Mishnah, that it was said that every law brought in Tosefta was obviously based on a passage in Mishnah.
Tosefta may also provide opinions of Tannaim on topics or issues not at all discussed in Mishnah, or may present the opinions of Tannaim very differently than their presentation in Mishnah.
For the student of the Babylonian Talmud, study of Tosefta opposite Mishnah before study of the sugyot in the Talmud is especially beneficial, since Amoraim in the Talmud may base their discussions on Tosefta.

Tosefta --  Britannica Concise Encyclopedia - The online encyclopedia you can trust!
The Tosefta consists of laws attributed to the authorities named in the Mishna and generally follows the topical program and organization of the Mishna.
The Tosefta may have been meant to complement the Mishna by preserving material that appeared marginal or contradictory.
In form and content the Tosefta is quite similar to the Mishna, the first authoritative codification of such laws, which was given its final form early in the 3rd century AD by Judah ha-Nasi.

Kavvanah (Concentration) for Prayer in the Mishnah and Talmud
Tosefta, a later rabbinic compilation which serves as a complicated appendix to Mishnah, adds the notion that another form of intrusion disrupts one's concentration for prayer.
Tosefta offers here not a rigorous rule for recitation, but some sage guidance to a person as he prepares to pray each day.
Tosefta expanded upon these basic ideas and added to them that everyday states of mind, such as discussion, mirth, and levity may affect one's concentration.

Answer: The Tosefta was written shortly after the Mishna was redacted, and seems to act as a supplement to it.
The Tosefta offers author's names for laws that are anonymous in the Mishna; It augments the Mishna with additional glosses and discussions.
Everything in the Tosefta is Baraita by definition, although there is much material that is considered Baraita that is from outside the Tosefta.

In the Tosefta, many of the esteemed Rabbis through the ages give their understanding of the scripture, and many of them have different view points seemingly due to their differing temperaments.
After a firm footing, the Tosefta would be followed in study by the Baraita (extraneous or outside teachings), which are considered less credible.

It is further possible that the Tosefta lists only obligations of a FATHER towards a SON, and training a child to keep mitzvot may also be incumbent upon the mother and/or towards a daughter.
The two mitzvot where the Tosefta specifically relates to the father's actions, tefillin and learning Torah, might be exceptional cases.
The simple reading of the Tosefta indicates that there is a mitzva on the father to train his son to say Keriat Shema.

It is argued that the variant readings between the text witnesses of the Tosefta on which Lieberman based his thesis do not emanate from adjustment to the Babylonian Talmud, but reflect the text-tradition of the tannaitic sources with which the Babylonian Talmud itself was familiar.

The Mishna is basic compilation of the Oral Law, and was written down around 200 CE.
Rashi (in his commentary on BT Sanhedrin 33a) writes that the Mishna was redacted by Rabbi Judah Ha-Nasi in consultation with members of the Academy, while the Tosefta was edited by Rabbis Hiyya and Oshaiah on their own.
The Tosefta is a Halakhic work which corresponds in structure almost exactly to the Mishna, with the same divisions for sedarim (orders) and masekhot (tractates).
