Total Eclipse (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Total Eclipse is a 1995 movie directed by Agnieszka Holland that depicts a fictionalized account of the intense but also abusive homosexual relationship between the two 19th century French poets, Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis) and Arthur Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio), a time when both of them experienced a height of creativity.
The film is thus told in an extended flashback as Verlaine reflects on the wild and abusive relationship he had with Rimbaud.
The most common criticism was that the film never explained the importance of these two great poets' works, especially their role in the development of the decadence or symbolism movement.

RoIO CD: Total Eclipse - A Retrospective 1967-1993
TOTAL ECLIPSE was conceived in 1993, well into Great Dane's ambitious "Pink Floyd Project." Great Dane had wanted to put out a box set that would appeal to the fans who had been terribly dissapointed with "Shine On," Pink Floyd's official release.
TOTAL ECLIPSE was meant to be chronological (although a few tracks are out of order) and comprehensive; something that could be listened to from beginning to end.
Of the film sequence itself, Nick Mason recalls that "there was a lot of news film, of cops and students fighting it out, all with no soundtrack apart from this very lyrical piano thing which Rick played as a solo." This version comes from the Theatre Champs D'Elyses show, January 23rd, 1970.

It appears likely that screenwriter Christopher Hampton, adapting his play, took some liberties with the facts, but even if ‘Total Eclipse’ is historically accurate in every detail, it’s hard to know exactly what we’re meant to feel.
Still, ‘Total Eclipse’ might be easier to take if director Agnieszka Holland and the script simply opted to let the tale run on sheer outrageousness, instead of trying to muster sympathy for the main characters.
There’s a weird sentimental streak running through the film that seems at odds with the rebellious stance established elsewhere.

The film, however, found a life of its own once released on video in the summer of 1996, mainly riding on its star power.

At the heart of Eclipse is a rather uncompromising love triangle: Verlaine, a member of the bourgeois, lives with wife Mathilde (Romane Bohringer) in her parent's home and Rimbaud, symbol of unconventional behavior, tries to destroy their marriage.
The poets are themselves "works in progress" and the best scenes in the film revolve around Verlaine's self-doubt and feelings of incompetence when his work is compared to that of Rimbaud's.
Despite its fascinating subject matter, Total Eclipse is both unflattering and loveless.

Verlaine tries to get inside Rimbaud's skin, ostensibly to make himself a better poet, and the film spends inordinate amounts of time following their misadventures: Verlaine and Rimbaud crash a party; Verlaine and Rimbaud frolic in a field; Verlaine and Rimbaud frolic on the street; Verlaine and Rimbaud frolic on a beach.
