My message was a bit misleading in that I didn't mean that spin is not an angular momentum - it is. It behaves like an angular momentum and the addition of spin and orbital angular momentum proceeds in the same way as for two orbital angular momenta (or two spins) e.g.
All I meant was that there is a distinction between these two types of angular momentum, and thus the "spin" of a particle cannot be due to the orbital angular momentum of some internal structure.
Orbital angular momentum exists in quantum mechanics as the quantum analogue of the classical orbital angular momentum - one merely takes the definition L = r x p (where x denotes the vector cross product), and replaces position r and momentum p with their respective operators.
