Connected space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A topological space X is said to be disconnected if it is the union of two disjoint nonempty open sets.
Related to this property, a space X is called totally separated if, for any two elements x and y of X, there exist disjoint open neighborhoods U of x and V of y such that X is the union of U and V.
Every discrete topological space is disconnected, in fact such a space is totally disconnected.

 5.3. Connected and Disconnected Sets
To show that a set is disconnected is generally easier than showing connectedness: if you can find a point that is not in the set S, then that point can often be used to 'disconnect' your set into two new open sets with the above properties.
Intuitively, totally disconnected means that a set can be be broken up into two pieces at each of its points, and the breakpoint is always 'in between' the original set.
Find a totally disconnected subset of the interval [0, 1] of length 0 (different from the Cantor set), and another one of length 1.

Let G be totally disconnected and let F be the trivial family TR consistin* *g of one element, namely the trivial group.
Since X is locally path-connected each path co* *mponent of X is open in X. We conclude that G is the disjoint union of the preimages of t* *he path components of X and each of these preimages is open in G and consists of one po* *int.
Corollary 3.5 Let G be a totally disconnected locally compact group and F a fa* *mily of subgroups of G. If E(Gd; Fd) is a Gd-CW -model for the classifying space of Gd* * for the family Fd, then G xGd E(Gd; Fd) is a G-CW -model for E(G; F).

Atlas: Classification of the simple totally disconnected contraction groups by Helge Glockner
Therefore the study of contraction groups splits into the cases of connected groups (fully discussed in [2]) and totally disconnected groups.
The main result is a classification of the simple, totally disconnected contraction groups.
As a consequence of the classification, each totally disconnected contraction group is a direct product G=tor(G)×div(G), where tor(G) is the subgroup of torsion elements and div(G) the subgroup of infinitely divisible elements.

 Julia Sets
This is a logical term, since a disconnected Julia set consists of individual points in the complex plane which, like sparsely sprinkled dust on a sheet, are not connected to any others.
The Cantor set of points is a totally disconnected set produced by successively dividing the line segment [0,1] in thirds and discarding the center segment yielding [0,1/3] and [2/3, 1], then repeating for each remaining line segment ad infinitum (Peitgen el al 68).
The distribution of points in a disconnected Julia set qualitatively resembles the appearance of the more easily envisioned Cantor dust in that they are totally disconnected.

Connectedness and disconnectedness, by Harriet Lord
A topological space Y is called A-disconnected if every continuous function from an A-connected space to Y must be constant.
The class of A-connected spaces is called a connectedness, and the class of A-disconnected spaces is called a disconnectedness.
In Connection and disconnection in LNM 719 (1979) pages 326-344, they extended many of their results to an even larger class of categories which included both topological categories and a large class of Abelian categories, and explored the relationship between connectedness and disconnectedness and torsion theory.
