The Totenkopf Panzergrenadier Regiment was to form the centre of the defence, with the reconnaissance battalion screening its left flank and the Theodor Eicke Panzergrenadier Regiment digging in on the right.
The Wiking, Das Reich and Totenkopf Divisions were now operating under the command of the Eighth Army (formerly Army Detachment Kempf) during the withdrawal back to the Dnieper at Kremenchug.
The Totenkopf Division remained on station in the Dnieper bend for the remainder of 1943.

Freikorps Danemark, was attached to the 3rd SS Division.
The Division stayed on defensive operation in the south and central sector of the German front for nearly a year, and during this time, in October, 1943, the Division was reformed and renamed as a Panzer Division.
Totenkopf launched an assualt taking it all the way to the Budapest airport, but was pulled back in an action that was hoped would result in the destruction of Soviet units to the North of the Budapest.

The division’s final cufftitle simply read “SS-Polizei-Division”, while an earlier, short-lived pattern that was introduced in April 1942 and supposed to be discontinued at the end of the same year showed the “police eagle”.
This division inherited its name from the regiment of the same name, which was transferred in from the “Wiking” division.
The origins of this division lay with the Walloon Legion, which was transferred from the Army to the Waffen-SS, where it first became a brigade before receiving its designation as a division in October 44.

Early 1941 saw the expansion of the Totenkopf division from 20,000 to 40,000 but of this number there were around 13,000 over-age reservists who were assigned occupation duties in Norway and France.
The Panzer divisions that formed part of Army Group North were taken away to take part in the drive on Moscow and Totenkopf along with the 4th SS Polizei Division and other Army units were left to besige the Russian city.
All through these engagements the grenadiers of this division fought bravely and determindly and in the winter of 1943-44 were transferred to firstly the central sector where they fought at Grodno and then further north in Poland along with the Wiking Division stopping the Soviet advance in the Bialystock area.

While the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler and Das Reich divisions were the spearheads of the Waffen-SS and took the forefront in the attack, it was the Totenkopf that held the line in Russia and gained respect from notable army generals such as Erich von Manstein and Maximilian Von Weichs.
Totenkopf was responsible for the execution of English prisoners of war and French colonial troops in France in 1940 and was alleged to ahve committed numerous war crimes on the Russian Front.

In August the division was involved in heavy fighting around Leningrad and had suffered in excess of 4000 casualties and by the end of the year was fully on the defence and down to approximately 50% strength.
In November 1943 the division was withdrawn and upgraded in status to a Panzer division.
The structure of the division also changed somewhat in the first half on 1943 when one of the original regiments, Nordland, was transferred to form the nucleus of a new Panzergrenadier division of the same name.
