Toto (pronounced toe-toe) is an American pop/rock/prog band which had their greatest commercial success in the 1980s.
Toto was formed in Los Angeles in 1977 (see 1977 in music) by David Paich, Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, brothers Steve and Jeff Porcaro, and David Hungate, the son of former United States Congressman and United States District Court Judge William L. Hungate.
Toto IV went multi-platinum and earned several Grammy Awards including 1983 Album of the Year and Record of the Year (for "Rosanna").

Before the TOTO IV tours begin, David Hungate leaves the band and is replaced by the third Porcaro brother, Mike.
TOTO starts writing songs for their next studio album and performs some of them at various summer festivals in Europe, including the Montreux Jazz Festival.

TOTO received this award from the from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers in Los Angeles.
TOTO received this award from the son of Alfred Lagarde, who died a year earlier, and was one of the biggest TOTO fans ever.
Toto was the 20th act in the entire history of CBS Records to receive this award.

Toto XX was released in Europe in spring 1998 (including the radio-hit "Goin' Home") and the XX anniversary parties featured the old bandmembers Bobby Kimball, Joseph Williams and Steve Porcaro.

"Toto IV" reached #4 on the US Billboard in July 1982 and was certified gold in June 1982 and platinum in December the same year.
After "Toto IV" David Hungate left the band and moved his family to Nashville and has since then worked as a session musician most in the country genre.
In August 1991 the album "Toto IV" was certified three million copies which means double platinum and in October 1991 the singles "Africa" and "Rosanna" from the album was certified gold.

I've liked them since 79 when Hold The Line was a big hit on the radio.
Toto IV is still one of my favorite albums especially the track Afraid Of Love,it sounds good with the bass turned all the way up.
My first concert was in 82 when I was 13 where Journey headlined a stadium show on their Escape tour and Toto was one of the bands,they were great.

To fault them for finally honing a songwriting craft after 4 years of steady work, and 10 years of professional session work, and that people of all types responded to it enthusiastically, is more to do with you than them.
I just think you have to be at a certain point where crash crash bang bang just doesn't hold as much interest any more, and funnily enough I reached that point at 20 years old.
In short, they are at their most inspired here and for artists of this calibre, that means an album that will always be regarded as an iconic classic of it's time.

The first album TOTO was nominated at the Grammys as Best New Group.
The TOTO IV album was nominated for no less than 9 Grammys and the band as a whole won a total of seven of these categories.

It was their IV album and I thought the old analogue synths on Rosanna and Africa sounded so very sweet.
Toto IV had a good photo of Steve Porcaro in front of his on-stage stack, it's hard to see on the CD but I think I've still got the album, will have to check.
I've got a good friend who plays guitar and sings back up vocals for Toto, I'll try and find out the inside scoop.

There are people who think that Toto is nothing more that a pop band.

I am not a huge Toto fan and I got this because I knew my wife liked a couple of the songs.
I rated the disk a 6 because of the disks I have this wont get as much play as some of the others stuff just because I prefer the some of the other stuff better.
As far as clarity though you wont go wrong with Toto IV, they have a sound that is perfect for Hi Res and it is very appealing from that standpoint.

 Any TOTO fans around here?
Although Toto is quite like pop music sometimes, they still have some awesome albums IMO, like Kingdom of Desire, Toto I, Toto IV, Turn Back and Hydra.
I've seen them in concert more than any other band, hands down.
I think it's an amazing DVD as well, but I've read a few Lukather interviews where he mentions how disappointed he is in his performance during that show.

In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group after being arrested for selling cocaine and was replaced by Dennis Frederiksen, who was replaced not long after by Joseph Williams, the son of famed conductor/composer John Williams.
American rapper Nas used a sample from the track "Africa" in his own song "New World".
When the mayor needed a "Band that everybody likes" to perform on the day of the Prop 10 vote, she decides after one suggestion to go with Toto.
