In 1798 Tottenham Hale was a small village, slightly separate from the High Road which was already established as an urban centre focused around High Cross Green (now known as Tottenham Green).
Tottenham Hale benefits from a very special location, including proximity to the Lee Valley Regional Park, and a public transport interchange, with excellent access to and from central London, the wider Haringey area and Europe via Stansted International Airport.
The Tottenham Hale International Masterplan will seek to build upon the findings of the gyratory study and to develop a framework to manage the change in the area to deliver a new, cohesive urban centre and a high quality transport interchange.

Tottenham: Growth after 1850 | British History Online
Tottenham's change from a select residential neighbourhood into a crowded, lower-middle- and workingclass suburb was hastened from 1858, when the City merchants and gentry who hitherto had dominated the local board were replaced by men who worked locally, notably doctors and builders, and who saw the district as ready for development.
The opening of stations on the Tottenham and Hampstead Junction line, beginning with South Tottenham in 1871, and the construction of the G.E.R. line through West Green in 1878, hastened the spread of building over the south of the parish.
Tottenham had 137,418 inhabitants in 1911, 146,711 in 1921, and 157,772 in 1931, while in Wood Green numbers rose more slowly from 49,369 to 50,707 and, in 1931, to 54,181.

Tottenham: Growth before 1850 | British History Online
The centre of Tottenham village, in so far as the roadside settlement possessed one, was marked by the high cross and by a green, the modern Tottenham Green, immediately south.
By the late 14th century traffic through Tottenham was in places impeded by residents, to judge from fines on tenants who had erected 'levesells' or bowers on the king's highway.
Tottenham Hale, which possessed an inn and which was marked separately in 1754, remained the one hamlet of any size; although comparatively close, in 1818 it had yet to be connected with High Road by building along High Cross Lane.
