 Definition of Rugby
Rugby is played with an oval-shaped, leather-covered, inflated ball, 11 to 12 inches (28-30 cm) long, 23 to 24½ inches (58-62 cm) in circumference, and weighing 14½ to 15½ ounces (400-440 gm).
Rugby matches are made up of two 40-minute periods of play, broken by a period of not more than five minutes at half-time (after which the teams change sides) and by not more than a two-minute period for each permitted delay in the match.
Rugby developed through an infraction of the rules by a Rugby School boy, William Webb Ellis, during a soccer (or association football, as it is known outside the United States) match in 1823.

Touch vs Tackle Rugby   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Touch rugby used to be called non-contact rugby to distinguish it from tackle rugby.
We simply call it touch rugby now to recognize that the players do bump into each other and fall to the ground, but the emphasis is on the two-hand tag (replacing the tackle) and purposeful collisions between players are against the rules.
Like touch rugby, as paradoxical as it no doubt sounds to those new to rugby, tackle rugby is safe, even to the point of a lower injury rate than other sports.

 English Rugby League History
Handling the ball was permitted in football in the early 1800's when players were allowed to take a mark and then a free kick, long before Ellis arrived at Rugby.
The reverse picture that the RFU has painted that the rugby game was born from soccer the moment Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it is clearly, even with very little examination, false.
What is known is that at Rugby School by the 1830's running with the ball was in common use, the goal posts had been extended to 18 feet high (with a cross-bar at 10 feet above the ground) and there were forms of scrummaging and line-outs.
