 Sense
School children are routinely taught that there are five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste; a classification first devised by Aristotle), though it is generally agreed that there are at least nine different senses in humans, and a minimum of two more observed in other organisms.
Touch or tactition is the sense of pressure perception, generally in the skin.
The 2004 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (announced 4 October 2004) was won by Richard Axel and Linda Buck for their work explaining olfaction, published first in a joint paper in 1991 that described the very large family of about one thousand genes for odorant receptors and how the receptors link to the brain.

Illusion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An illusion is a distortion of a sensory perception.
Touch illusions exploit the human sense of touch.
Unlike an hallucination, which is a sensory experience in the absence of a stimulus, an illusion describes a distortion of a perception so it is understood and interpreted differently.

Illusions may occur with more of the human senses than vision, but visual illusions are the most well known and understood.
In the Ponzo illusion the converging parallel lines tells the brain the image higher in the visual field is further away therefore the brain perceives the image to be larger, although the two images hitting the retina are the same size.
Examples of Touch illusions include Phantom limb, the Thermal grill illusion, and the tactile illusion which occurs when the middle finger is crossed over the pointer finger and the fingers are ran along the bridge of the nose to the tip with one finger on each side of the nose.

With this illusion, an individual perceives simultaneous touches to multiple locations on an area of skin as a single touch at the center of that area.
When the monkeys were touched on one digit alone, the researchers observed a response in Area 3b of the somatosensory cortex, the area previously determined to process information from that digit.
However, when the monkey was touched simultaneously on both digits, a single cortical location between the maps of the two individual digits responded, explaining the perceived location of the illusion.

Vanderbilt University psychology department researchers Anna Wang Roe, Li Min Chen and Robert Friedman have identified responses in the brain to a touch illusion that shed new light on how the brain processes sensory information and call into question long-held theories about the nature of the “map” of the body in the brain.
When the monkeys were touched on one digit alone, the researchers observed a response in Area 3b of the somatosensory cortex, the area previously determined to process information from that digit.

Imaging Spells   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-20)
A caster can never produce a good illusion of a sensation he has not experienced (although he may be able to fool others who have not either), and in any case producing good mental images is a difficult skill.
Moving Illusion spells are a variation of the Illusion spells where the caster keeps control of the motion of the illusion throughout.
Alternatively, the illusion can be set into motion at the start of the spell, in which case it keeps moving in the given direction or in some rhythmic fashion.

 Brain Maps Perceptions, Not Reality
New research published in the Oct. 31 issue of the journal Science indicates our perceptions of these illusions are no hoax, but the result of how the brain is organized to process the information it receives from our senses.
Walter Penfield is credited with first establishing in 1957 that a map of the human body exists in the brain, with specific areas of the cortex processing information from different body areas.
Although the perception of this illusion has been studied for decades, researchers did not know how it was processed by the brain.

Illusions such as mirror writing, provide interesting insights into the organization and coordination of perceptual systems.
In other words, when the strokes on the real hand and the rubber hand were synchronized, people ignored the fact that their arm was located to their left side behind a screen.
Botvinick and Cohen hypothesized that this illusion occurred because vision, touch, and proprioception are correlated to the extent that proprioception can be distorted when visual and tactile information is coordinated.
