TouchType was written by software veteran Glenn Reid, who not only has worked for Adobe, but also NeXT and most recently Fractal Design; he now does contract programming and consulting for a variety of clients, including Adobe.
There are four ways to kern in TouchType: using the Touch button on the Kerning Tools panel; dragging the slider in the Kerning Tools panel; using the arrow keys to move characters; and using other menu commands.
By default, TouchType saves files with a.type extension, which is really an EPS file with a different extension.
It was advertised as a revolution in typesetting, but, when I first saw it, I thought it was wrong, misguided, and verging on the blasphemous.
In TouchType, by contrast, you manipulate characters directly – you click on characters to select them, and then drag to adjust their kerning, baseline shift, size, and other formatting.
Almost everything in TouchType was done “by eye” – no need to enter numbers or choose options from a pop-up menu.

TouchType is an app for just that, adjusting type as if one were touching it as immediately interactive and well-nigh as tactile as hand-setting metal type.
Multiple letters may be selected as shown below by click-dragging a highlight rectangle which selects/deselects letters as the selection touches/ceases to highlight them.
TouchType makes creating headline type effortless---and no matter how one rearranges a text, it still remembers the order of characters for ease of editing.
