Smart Computing Encyclopedia Entry - touchpad   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Similar to a mouse, a touchpad is a device for moving a pointer around a computer display.
Additionally, a touchpad is a sealed unit so it is unaffected by crumbs or dust, a real asset for a portable device that might be used in almost any environment.
Some proponents of touchpads feel they are less likely than a mouse to cause repetitive motion injuries; not all experts agree with this assessment.

 EE476 final project: Zen touchpad
For the Zen touchpad, absolute tracking is most appropriate, because we want locations on the touchpad relative to its edges and size to correspond to the same locations on the LCD, also relative to its edges and size.
Alps Electronics' own documentation for their touchpad explains the data format used for "advanced mode," which is basically absolute position reporting, as opposed to "mouse compatibility mode," in which the touchpad reports relative position like a PS/2 mouse.
To facilitate reading and writing bytes from and to the touchpad, I first wrote some helper functions and macros, including routines that wait for the clock (pin C0) and data (pin C1) lines to float high or be pulled low and a delay subroutine that simply spins for a given number of microseconds.

UK Touchpad - Free UK Delivery on many items
Touchpads commonly operate by sensing the capacitance of a finger.
Touchpads are primarily used in portable laptop computers, because the usual mouse device requires a flat table adjacent to the keyboard not always available away from the office.
But touchpads have some advantages over the mouse, particularly that the pad's position is fixed relative to the keyboard, and very short finger movements are required to move the cursor across the display screen.

Computer system having a configurable touchpad-mouse button combination - Patent 6392637
With a touchpad however, the user is required to incorporate the full width and length of the pad, approximately 11/2 to 2 inches, to move the cursor.
As such, when overlay 46e is adhered to touchpad 42, the single section 1246a overlays second part 42b of touchpad 42 for cursor functions, and the plurality of sections 1146a and 1146b overlay first part 42a of touchpad 42 for button functions.
The touchpad is configured with a first portion which is usable for button functions to select items on a display panel, and a second portion which is usable for cursor movement and placement functions.

 CHI 97: The Tactile Touchpad
Although touchpads are also available for desktop computers, most people prefer a mouse for their desktop system.
With a touchpad, pointer movement is accomplished by sliding a finger along the touchpad's surface.
Similar feedback may be elicited from a touchpad by means of a mechanical solenoid or relay positioned under the pad and activated with an electrical signal to create a "click" sensation in the fingertip.

Method for gesture detection on a touchpad patent invention
In a gesture detection method for a touchpad, various gestures such as tap, drag and double tap are determined by operating an object to touch on the touchpad, leave from the touchpad, and move on the touchpad.
When the sensed value is greater than a threshold th, it is determined that an object touches on the touchpad 100, and on the contrary, when the sensed value is less than the threshold th, it is determined that the object leaves the touchpad 100 or no object touches on the touchpad 100.

The three regions of touchpad 224 may be activated or deactivated selectively, based on a particular touch region or “contact patch” sensed by touchpad 224 in association with the particular region of sensor 240 that detects a hand portion or fingers extending towards the keys of keyboard 222.

What is a Touchpad?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
A touchpad is a device designed to translate user input in the form of motions aimed at moving a cursor to a computer.
Instead of using sensors and a roller ball or laser like a mouse, a touchpad is a soft pad with sensors that respond to finger movements on the pad.
In addition to the basic mouse-like function that a touchpad provides, it can also be programmed to have “hot spots.” When the user taps on one of these spots, it can be used to scroll a document, open a frequently used program, or perform some other commonly used function.

A Synaptics touchpad by default operates in compatibility mode by emulating a standard mouse.
If, instead, you set MaxTapMove=0 in the X config file, then the touchpad will not use tapping for a single finger tap (left mouse button click) but will for the two and three finger tap (middle and right button click).
The gpm driver and the X driver both try to read data from the touchpad, and if they try to read at the same time, both drivers see incomplete data and don't know how to interpret it.

:: View topic - A macro control for touchpad in racks too, not only AU/VSTs
This way people with instruments with a touchpad could assign this software touchpad to whatever they want withing the rack and could have different setups for the touchpad for different racks (since the setup was rack specific, just like the macro controllers).
Of course mapping them to the macro knobs limits the usage a bit, since the 8 macro knobs could have some specific tweaking parameters and touchpad could be set to something totally different.
But I guess the touchpad to the macro knobx would be much more simple than making a completely new mapping for the pad itself..
