	Touring Bikes
		Touring bikes have more relaxed angles and a longer wheelbase than a road bike, thus providing more stability and less "twitchiness".
		The gearing on a touring bike is usually more like a mountain bike - mine had a 22-32-42 triple in the front and a 12-28 8-speed in the rear.
		If you are truly thinking of touring (by which I mean carrying your own gear), consider a true touring bike, as opposed to a hybrid.

		Top pull derailers are mainly used on mountain bikes, because they permit the designer to avoid running the gear cables by the bottom bracket, where they are exposed to spray from the front wheel.
		To non-cyclists, or casual cyclists, "touring" may mean riding 8 miles on a rented cruiser at a beach resort, or a fund-raising "thon" ride, or any type of riding where the principal objective is leisurely enjoyment of scenery and fresh air.
		Note: the term "sport touring" is sometimes used to refer to a "light-touring" bike by cyclists too young to remember the 10-speed era.

	Evolution of a Touring Bike
		I would appear that someone bought the bike, took one trip into the slush and abandoned the idea when they found that crashing into trees and doing face plants in the mud wasn't nearly as much fun as they had expected.
		The Geezers were going to Parke County Indiana to tour covered bridges and since many of them are located on either gravel or dirt roads, I chose the Sedona instead of my regular touring bike.
		My next planned tour on the Sedona will be to follow the march route of General Custer from Camp Supply in Western Oklahoma to where he engaged the Cheyenne in the Battle of the Washita.

		We have tour reports with photos from our seven tours by bike.
		Two of our other journeys are Touring Italia between Linköping (Sweden) and Rome in 1998 and Iberia Tour between Paris and Lisbon via Gibraltar in 1999.

		I pondered about purchasing a folding bike, such as a Bike Friday, and also investigated having a frame built with SandS couplers for a break-apart bike.
		I just couldn't go touring with a green metal-flake bike though, so after disassembly, I had the frame stripped and powder-coated fl - a nondescript colour that is not too appealing to the light fingered and easily touched up when inevitably scratched.
		I rode the bike empty for the first run of 15km and then put the full touring load on - 4 panniers, handlebar bag, dry sack on top of rack - about 45lbs of gear total and rode the same 15km route.

		Nowadays on my Marin mountain bike, when flats have been very rare (I had a brief spate of weird flats caused, it turned out, by a tiny cut in the plastic rim tape, other than that, no problems), I carry a small Blackburn Mammoth pump nestled under one of the water bottle cages.
		The purity of a clean bike is somewhat diminished when you have to drop it on the ground every time you park.
		I later got a motorcycle, which is a decent compromise between bike and car touring, and actually used these bike panniers on it for a trip, and later got married to a mostly non-cycling woman, and then had kids, and the right mix of time and money just hasn't come together again.
