This made staying with East German friends or family difficult, as both the reluctance of the authorities to permit it and the knowledge that the Stasi were almost certainly watching made it both dangerous and uncomfortable for the East German hosts.
Visitors to East Germany were effectively obliged to stay in hotels belonging to the state-run Interhotel network.

The German Democratic Republic was proclaimed in East Berlin on October 7, 1949 in the Soviet-occupied zone of Germany, following the proclamation in May 1949 of the Federal Republic of Germany ("West Germany") in the zones of Germany formerly occupied by the United States, Britain and France.
Later the KPD was refounded in West Germany and banned again for supporting the Red Army Faction.After 1990 the party was again refounded in Germany under the name DKP (German Communist Party) which still exists.
Like other East European socialist states, East Germany had a centrally planned economy (CPE), similar to the one in the former Soviet Union, in contrast to the more familiar market economies or mixed economies of most Western states.
