The Hong Kong government is spending HK$400 million (US$51 million) on a series of events including music shows, fireworks, and appearances by sports stars such as footballer David Beckham and ice skater Michelle Kwan to repair the territory's image.
Michael Wu, chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Travel Agents, said last week that hotel occupancy rates were now averaging 90 percent, in sharp contrast with May and June when some hotels were nearly empty.

Yet, the conditions for developing eco-tourism are poor: clumsy regulations, unimaginative Hong Kong image promotions and the obsession with mainland Chinese shoppers are key reasons I believe (a recent survey found that only 10% of visitors come to Hong Kong for sightseeing — partly because so little of Hong Kong is promoted??).
Those Discovery and National Geographic channels are very popular; very few people will visit Hong Kong solely for birding (say), but many more might be interested in a Mai Po trip, or a hike or a dolphinwatch, as part of a holiday that could include shopping, dining, whatever.
