The Tournament of Roses Parade was established in 1890 and is held on New Year's Day in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) north-east of downtown Los Angeles-except if January 1 falls on a Sunday, in which case the parade occurs on January 2.
For the 2006 Tournament of Roses parade on January 2, winds with gusts up to 45 mph (72 km/h) and five inches (130 mm) of rain in the Pasadena area were predicted.
Parade organizers were in shock after the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia less than a week earlier.

I personally think the parade would be sterile and boring if all we got were Lassiter-style bands (no offense--you all were great) marching down the street.
In case anyone cares why I know so much about TofR, I was born and raised in Pasadena, and marched the Rose Parade 9 years in a row with the Official Tournament of Roses Honor Band (2 as a trombone, 2 as drum major, and 5 as the head visual guy).
The country is broken up into regions as far as the Rose Parade selection...and 1 band from each (I think it's 13) region is selected every year to get a fair representation of the country.
