Gliding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most commonly used rising masses of air are thermals (updrafts of warm air), ridge lift (found where the wind blows against the face of a hill and is forced to rise), and wave lift (standing waves in the atmosphere, analogous to the ripples on the surface of a stream).
On rare occasions, glider pilots have been able to use a technique called "dynamic soaring", where a sailplane can be made to gain kinetic energy by repeatedly crossing the boundary between air masses of different horizontal velocity.
A variation on this is the "reverse pulley" method in which the car drives towards the glider that it is launching; the cable connecting the car and glider passes around a pulley at the far end of the airfield.

Hang Gliding / Paragliding Association of Canada Towing Procedures Manual
Since the tug's minimum towing speed may be fairly high for the hang glider, the glider may have a strong nose-up tendency, which can be reduced by using a two-point bridle, where the second point is the carabiner, or on the keel at or forward of the hang point.
A dual bridle attaches to the tow line by a short length of rope which is routed over the control bar to the dual release on the pilot's harness, and by an approximately 1 m longer length which is routed under the bar to the dual release and is slack during launch.
For hang gliders, bridles are either "one to one" as shown previously, or, for advanced pilots and gliders, may be a shorter bridle which is connected to the pilots harness at the chest or shoulders only.

Safety and Operating Rules   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The moving of gliders to the end of the runway shall be along the South edge of the runway and moved only when the pattern is clear of landing aircraft and shall not obstruct or delay aircraft ready to be towed.
Tow speeds shall be 65 to 70 MPH, unless otherwise advised by the sailplane pilot.
The pilot in command shall bear in mind that the Club gliders are not his or her personal aircraft, and therefore an extra measure of care, safety and judgement must be exercised.

Gliders that are grounded must be visibly tagged as grounded and left in the hanger.
For safety do not allow gliders to be left unattended unless the spoilers have been left open and a tire or two (depending on wind strength) have been placed on the wing tip and the canopy closed and locked.
When the tow plane lands and returns to the launch point the next glider in the grid should be ready in all respects (pilot(s) strapped in, preflight checks done, canopy closed, tow rope laid ready for connection (or connected) wing runner ready and tow plane signal relay person in position.

He assures that the pattern is clear and initiates the tow by announcing "glider tow in progress" and taxis onto the active runway with the glider.
All tow pilots are required to fly 3 flights in a glider every 12 months, or 3 flights in a tow plane towing a glider while supervised by another current tow pilot, in accordance with FAR 61.69.

Imagine hundreds of gliders swooping over the English Channel in the wee hours of June 6, 1944, their passenger-soldiers unaware if they'll make it out alive after crashing into the hedgerow-filled fields of Normandy in the dark under anti-aircraft fire, with nothing but a paper-thin fuselage for protection.

The history of towing is full of stories of some highly experienced pilots getting injured (or worse) when they tried to tow without expert supervision.
You'll learn all the elements, including the teamwork necessary for a good towing system: the hardware, vehicle use and driving, radio usage on the ground as well as hearing pilots in flight, weaklinks, towline, and other equipment du jour.
After several successful tows in real calm conditions, you may be allowed to tow in increasingly turbulent conditions.
