In Polish army, the towarzysz was a noble who served in the Army.
The rank of Towarzysz husarski (Hussar Companion) was equivalent to that of an Ensign (Standard-bearer) in armies of other countries.

Towarzysz pancerny (companion of \'mail-coated\' cavalry), plural: Towarzysze pancerni or Pancerni were the name of a class of medium cavalry in 17th and 18th century Poland, named after their armour made of chainmail (Old Polish pancerz).
Most pancerni were recruited from the middle or poorer levels of the Polish nobility or szlachta.
In modern Polish, "pancerni" also means "tank men", as in the title of a "Czterej pancerni i pies" (Four tank men and a dog) tv series.
