  Tower of Hanoi
The Tower of Hanoi puzzle was invented by the French mathematician Edouard Lucas in 1883.
We are given a tower of eight disks (initially four in the applet below), initially stacked in increasing size on one of three pegs.
The objective is to transfer the entire tower to one of the other pegs (the rightmost one in the applet below), moving only one disk at a time and never a larger one onto a smaller.

According to the legend of the Tower of Hanoi (originally the "Tower of Brahma" in a temple in the Indian city of Benares), the temple priests are to transfer a tower consisting of 64 fragile disks of gold from one part of the temple to another, one disk at a time.
The disks are arranged in order, no two of them the same size, with the largest on the bottom and the smallest on top.

Sierpinski Gasket and Tower of Hanoi
As was discovered by Ian Stewart, puz(Tower of Hanoi) has a surprising relationship to the Sierpinski gasket (also known as the Sierpinski triangle) and, therefore, to Pascal's triangle.
In the Tower of Hanoi puzzle, disks stacked on one peg are to be moved to another with, perhaps an intermediate stop at a third, auxiliary peg.

Also, there are now two towers of disks of alternating colors.

The Tower of Hanoi (sometimes referred to as the Tower of Brahma or the End of the World Puzzle) was invented by the French mathematician, Edouard Lucas, in 1883.
He was inspired by a legend that tells of a Hindu temple where the pyramid puzzle might have been used for the mental discipline of young priests.
The number of separate transfers of single disks the priests must make to transfer the tower is 2 to the 64th minus 1, or 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 moves!

Tower of Hanoi is a game where you have three pegs and five discs.
While it has been believed that the game "Tower of Hanoi" was created in ancient India, it seems more likely that the game was created from scratch by the French mathematician Edouard Lucas, in 1883.
