"Solar chimneys (towers) have become a hot area of research recently," said S.A. Sherif, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida, who wrote several papers on the technology in the early 1990s and is the technical editor of the Solar Energy journal.
Solar power is at a tipping point, especially on the utility power plant scale, said Brad Collins, executive director of The American Solar Energy Society.
Despite the advantages of solar power towers, especially over the long term, it's unlikely one will be built in the United States.

Instead of one huge 1 km blade, the tower could be used to mount a large array of conventional windmills.
Perhaps the tower bit should be left out, and the giant windmill contructed on an existing mountain with a sheer 1 km face.
Not sure if the tower would be designed to swivel or not, perhaps at high altitude the wind flow is relatively stable directionally, removing the need for a moving anchor for the cable.

You could build an argument that there's nothing in the TOP catalog that James Brown hadn't done better before, and even at their best they were prone to third-rate soul ballads, but when they got hold of a good riff, look out!
The TOP horn section has appeared on a bunch of projects, and is perhaps best known for working with 80s cornball Huey Lewis.

A lot of hardcore TOP fans will disagree with this, but I was never happy with Live and In Living Color because of the songs it left out and because the horns on You're Still a Young Man just don't sound as good as the studio version.
TOP: The Warner Years has the studio versions of all my favorites, just the way I heard them on the radio in the early and mid 70s.

Tower of Power played regularly in the Bay Area throughout the late '60s, as its lineup often swelled up to ten members, including such other mainstays as Greg Adams on trumpet and vocals and Rocco Prestia on bass.
While Tower of Power remained a must-see live act, the quality of their subsequent records became erratic, resulting in some admirable releases (Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now, Live and in Living Color) and several uninspired albums that are best skipped over (We Came to Play, Back on the Streets).

Though tenor sax legend Gordon was living in Europe in the '60s (where jazz players were treated as artists rather than "entertainers," and where racism was less an issue), he would come back home to the USA to play and record.
That's where TOWER comes in, where a producer with brains paired Gordon with the equally legendary tenor saxophonist James Moody on the album's easy-going yet spirited opener "Montmartre." No dueling saxes--just a sheer, for-the-fun-of-it blowing session on a Gordon original.
As a matter of fact, almost all of TOWER's tunes are Gordon originals--none of the usual standards.
