THE COLD SPOT \ Movies \ Tower of Terror
The Tower of Terror ride at Disney-MGM Studios theme park, upon which this TV movie is based, possesses so much atmosphere that it's doubly sad so little of it was transferred into the film.
Tower, the movie, was apparently partially shot on the grounds of the ride, so director D.J. MacHale has no excuse for not capturing the creepiness that the ride's "hotel lobby" alone has in spades.
The backstory of Tower of Terror will be familiar to those who took the ride: five people were in one of the Hollywood Tower Hotel's elevators in 1939 when it was struck by lightning.

Fun Facts of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
In the Tower of Terror, all of the ramps and walkways are tilted at a 2-4 degree angle.
In the pre-video for the Tower of Terror, if you listen closely, you can hear the little girl saying, "BOR-ing...BOR-ing..." The rest of her family is scared to death by the eerie events, but she's just standing there going, "BOR-ing!" You can ride many times without noticing her saying it.
On the tower of terror ride the little girl is actually singing the old nursery rhyme "It's raining, it's pouring..." not it's boring, it's boring.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at DCA - etixland.com
From the first announcements of this transplanted Tower attraction, I was disappointed by the decision to recycle Orlando's hit thriller instead of adapting the ride technology for an original show on the west coast.
During the Tower's concept preview and construction at DCA — an obvious skyline landmark in the park's mostly flat topography — I had misgivings about its southwestern design: while representative of the Los Angelino architecture of the period, I thought the style lacked the gothic altitude and attitude of Orlando's Tower.
The same skills are displayed at work here with the Tower environs, only not at the same level of clever creativity and with one large disappointment remaining: the high visibility of Hyperion Theater's massive queue area still dominates the Tower's entrance area in all its body-clogged splendor.

Construction of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Walt Disney Studios Park today reached an important new milestone, as the landmark building was topped-out with the addition of its heighest dome, giving the official height of 183 feet to far and away the tallest building at Disneyland Resort Paris.
Applied on the back of the tower, down one concrete column, the paint currently being used is an off-white colour applied on top of a deeper orange/yellow base coat, perhaps some kind of primer or plaster used to prepare the bare concrete surface of the tower for painting.
Tower of Terror is gaining more height, thanks to a small construction at the top of the building which will carry one of the three domes.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Tower of Terror (1997)
The original Tower of Terror, however, is a haunted house ride at Disney/MGM Studios, Florida (which, in turn, is based on the television series, The Twilight Zone), where they strap you into an elevator and drop you.
The TV movie, Tower of Terror is based on that ride, minus the Twilight Zone references -- as closely based as a movie can be on a plotless ride, anyway.
Attempting to make this movie scary, but still family-oriented, there are more false jump scenes (most of which fail) than I could have imagined possible.

Timed to promote the "Tower Of Terror" ride at Disneyland and Disneyworld, which is notable mainly for the Twilight Zone themed 1930s hotel lobby you go through while waiting in line for the ride.
When the ride was first built, it was to tell the tragic story of "The Bride," her would-be wedding, the ghosts of guests still dancing in the ballroom, and her headless groom (his head in a hatbox).
The headless groom, by the way, was removed from the Disneyland ride after just one month, because the figure's head was supposed to appear in the hatbox when the fl light was turned off on the identical head on his body, but Disneyland riders could still make out the head without the light on it.
