The Locomotive is located at the Roanoke Transportation Museum at Roanoke, Virginia.
This locomotive, along with its' sister units, remained in active operating service until 1964 when they were replaced by new units designed for operation on the new electrical power frequency (60 cycle) that the Panama Canal was converted to.
Towing capacity of the complete unit (Traction Motors, Winch and Ship Cable) was 25,000 or 12 1/2 tons.

The locomotive was in a park about a half a block from where it started the day, but pointed in the proper westerly direction towards Hyde Park Blvd. But the tender was on another track section, and still on its original more northerly heading.
Apparently, much of the day was spent with a series forward and backward motions, where they would send the locomotive on a curve as far to the left as possible, relay the track behind curving more to the right, towing it back, then relaying the track in front more to the left, and so on.

The inclusion of a very dubious locomotive for train heating on the set that D1041 was using was very disappointing (I know of at least two people who refused to travel and stayed with D832 and D7076 all day), but unfortunately necessary to provide heat for the coaches.
The locomotive had problems with starting in the morning, then B transmission refused to reverse at Bury which meant that all the remaining trips out of Bury to Rawtenstall were made on one engine.
The survival of these two locomotives may be dependant on the survival of the elderly Talgo III coaching stock, which might have all but disappeared by the end of the year.

{{on my soapbox}} If those trucks were in America, we would not be allowed to charge enough money to facilitate the purchase of the proper towing equipment.
I first saw them while watching the discovery channel or another channel and they interviewed a driver of a road train and it kinda takes a special guy to drive one of them for days without seeing anyone.
some of these trucks are the size of earth movers,some have engines that you would see in a locomotive and drink about 600 gallons of fuel a day.
