The Shire's main towns are Daylesford/Hepburn Springs with 3,500 residents, Creswick with 2,480 residents, Clunes with 920 residents and Trentham with 710 residents, Small Towns and Rural Areas 6,710.
The Shire is the third fastest growing non-metropolitan municipality in the State and is predicted to be the second fastest by the year 2000.
Approximately 80% of the Shire’s population lives in the 10% of the Shire that is classed as urban, while the remaining population is unevenly dispersed throughout the remaining area within some 50 plus townships, small communities and rural areas.

Towong Shire is in northeast Victoria east from Albury-Wodonga.
At the other end of the shire, we’ve got a reasonably typical pattern that you find in more isolated broad -acre areas of basically declining populations, and a countryside where the economy is pretty much dependent on agriculture, which has its advantages, but also some disadvantages.
From the shire’s point of view, and I have been a person on the Council for a number of years, I see down there that I think that the potential of subdivision should be taken up as quickly as possible.

As I said, it relates to one kindergarten teacher in the one kindergarten that the Shire operates and it is - I believe that the documentation before you demonstrates that the agreement meets the requirements of the Act.

The State Government has called in Alpine Shire Council officers to help the Northern Grampians Shire and Ararat Rural City Council communities in their bushfire recovery.
Alpine Shire CEO, Doug Sharp said he and the Shire’s Manager Development Services, Ronnie Beauchamp will spend time with Councillors and staff of the two municipalities this week, advising on recovery initiatives.
Alpine Shire Council experienced 24 days of fire crisis in January 2003 and spent more than a year pursuing community, business and tourism recovery.

 Media Release: BATCHELOR: DOYLE PLAN DISADVANTAGES TOWONG SHIRE
The Minister for Transport, Peter Batchelor, today detailed how Robert Doyle’s subsidising of road tolls for motorists in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs will leave the people of regional Victoria out in the cold.
“His plan to allocate $1.62 million over three years to the Shire of Towong for road funding is peanuts compared to the $800 million of Victorian taxpayers’ money he is going to use in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs to subsidise tolls.
Mr Batchelor said the Leader of the National Party, Peter Ryan, had already condemned the Doyle plan because of the effect it would have on the provision of infrastructure in regional Victoria.
