	Towpath
		A towpath is a road or track that runs alongside the banks of a river, canal or other inland waterway.
		The purpose of a towpath is to pull a boat, often a barge, behind a land vehicle, beasts of burden or a team of human pullers.
		This mode of transport was common before efficient engines could be fitted on boats and where sailing was impossible due to rapid current or unfavourable winds.

		The towpath continues on at this point, on the other side of Manchester Road, but may not yet be open due to construction along that stretch.

		Along the towpath of the old Ohio and Erie Canal, which lies beneath the Ohio Turnpike’s Cuyahoga River twin bridges seven miles east of the Towpath Service Plaza, straining mules once pulled the canal barges that brought improved transportation and prosperity to Ohio in the 1830s and 1840s.

		The rediscovery of the towpath began with the establishment of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 1974.

	Cycling Ohio Rail-Trails & Bikeways - Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
		The towpath trail is now open from the Center Road Trailhead to Vanderhoof Road [between Clinton and Barberton].
		Along with the Little Miami Scenic Trail, the towpath is probably one of the two most visited trails in Ohio.

		A walk along the 60-mile towpath of the Delaware Canal is a stroll into American History.
		The Delaware Canal is the only remaining continuously intact canal of the great towpath canal building era of the early and mid-19th century.

		The success of this segment of towpath, which has over 1.7 million users per year, has sparked a campaign to extend the Towpath Trail to over 100 miles as a continuous journey through the federally designated Ohio and Erie National Heritage Corridor.

		At end of the last column (Mike’s Column 4) we were standing on the canal towpath – watching a clash of interests, a conflict between two peaceful occupations – cycling and fishing – the cyclist and the fisherman; Tweedledum and Tweedledee we could call them.

	Central Canal Towpath, Indy Greenways
		The Towpath is more than five miles long, from the Canal's headwater in Broad Ripple to its south terminus at 30th Street.
		Today, the Central Canal Towpath is the lynchpin of a Greenways loop that includes the Monon Trail and the White River Wapahani Trail, and a cross-downtown connection formed by St. Clair and Dorman Streets.
		In 2001 and 2002, the section from Guilford Avenue to the Monon Trail was paved, landscaped and lit with gaslights as part of a Broad Ripple Village beautification project.
