While System of a down are often cast with the nu-metal crowd, their sound is closer to '80s thrash (and even hardcore punk) than to any of the rap-metal hordes.
Make no mistake, the thrash quotient on TOXICITY is high enough to satiate even the hungriest headbanger, but System of a Down understands the power of dynamics, often moving from a whisper to a scream over the course of the album (though they obviously spend far more time on the scream end of the spectrum).

Malakian and his bandmates — keyboardist/vocalist Serj Tankian, bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan — were shaped by Jane's Addiction, Pink Floyd, The Smiths and Slayer, as well as jazz, world-beat and rap stylings that lend distinction to their critically and commercially accepted brand of rock-metal.

Mind you, to be aesthetically pleasing is not System’s way: "She’s On Heroin" and "Stealing Society" are lurid snapshots of society at its most grotesque, schizophrenic canvases of thrash metal and dizzying Cossack rhythms as warped and twisted as the drug addicts and insane dictators they inevitably depict.
I think a lot of people jumped on the System of a Down bandwagon because of Toxicity's melody combined with the hook of Serj's unique vocals; these albums are a lot more complex in construction, so no doubt these "fans" will just download the "funny" tracks and not actually listen to the music.
