Scientific Name:: The genus is derived from the combination of two Greek words, toxon (a bow) and stoma (mouth), which refers to the curved bill of the Brown Thrasher.
The species name, rufum, is Latin for "reddish," which refers to its body color.
Color: Rusty-brown above; buffy under parts with streaking; faint buffy wing bars; yellow eye.

Therefore, I conducted a study to examine its variation, both temporally, and under different land management practices (fire and grazing) in a population of Brown Thrashers (Toxostoma rufum) nesting on the Konza Prairie Research Natural Area.
In addition, I monitored snake populations to determine if variation in nest predation is consistent with variation in predator abundance and activity.
