Toyo Ito had been invited (or should i say "challenged") to design the internal architecture of the glass and steel lobby created by Mies van der Rohe in 1968.
Ito used the floor of the lobby as a 120 x 120 grid and covered it with a wooden waving floor, creating a striking hilly landscape.

Toyo Ito Wins the Royal Gold Medal | Dexigner
The Japanese architect, Toyo Ito, is the winner of one of architecture's most prestigious prizes, the Royal Gold Medal.
In 1971 he opened his own office, Urban Robot (URBOT), which was renamed Toyo Ito and Associates, Architects in 1979.
In the '70s, inspired by early modernist movements such as Purism and the straightforward use of easily available industrial materials, he sought to erase conventional meaning from his work through minimalist tactics, illustrated in his early projects such as White U (1976) and Silver Hut (1984).

This is a comprehensive monograph on the Japanese architect Toyo Ito, one of the most influential figures on the contemporary architectural scene.
Toyo Ito has, since the 1970s, been carrying out research into building materials, light and space-research that has led him to design buildings which he himself has defined as "non material".
Over the years, Ito has gradually simplified his language, and his works, the obvious structure of which has increasingly disappeared, can be studied as a series of variations on the layering of the facade.

architettura moderna, Le Corbusier, Toyo Ito - Electaweb

 Toyo Ito in Bruges
Ito, known all over the world for his many important projects, including the Yokohama Tower of Winds, the Sendai Mediateque and the Hannover Expo Pavilion, was appointed by the city of Bruges to design the pavilion that renews one of its oldest town squares.
The resulting building features a structure of perforated aluminium and glass: the combination of materials creates that effect of lightness and transparency typical of Toyo Ito's work, augmented by a "silent" round mirror of water reflecting the nature of the city.
The linear geometry of the construction technology alters the look of the whole square, redrawing and characterising it; the work is no doubt destined to become a new symbol of the old medieval city and of the architecture of the new millennium.

 Ellipsis Guide:Tokyo:Tower of Winds
In the Tower of Winds, Toyo Ito represents the visual complexity of Tokyo metaphorically in terms of a never-ceasing, ever-changing wind.
In contrast to the west, where the city is perceived as a permanent museum of monuments and spaces, Ito sees Tokyo as ephemeral, articulated not through its buildings, but through electricity pylons and vending machines, illuminated advertisements and traffic signals; it is the small scale, the temporary and the chance encounter that define his city.
With its prosaic daytime presence, reference to temporary structures and spectral nocturnal life, the Tower of Winds presents the city of Toyo Ito's imagination.

Toyo Ito. 2004
A pattern of trees growing upwards, crossing over one another and interacting continuously: this is the new Tod's building in Tokyo, designed by Toyo Ito for the well-known shoe and bag maker.
Toyo Ito's goal seems to have been combining full and empty spaces, transparencies and solids, lightweight and material effects, in the attempt to create "designed" architecture.
The result is a structure created by superimposition of multiple tree shapes which branch off as they rise, growing thinner and lightening the building¿s design.
