2005 Toyota ECHO - Detailed Pricing and Specifications - MSN Autos
The ECHO is Toyota’s entry-level car that is one of the highest fuel-mileage passenger cars sold in the U.S. market.
The ECHO was introduced for the 2000 model year and features a higher roof and higher seating positions than what was traditionally found in the entry-level segment.
The Echo is a surprisingly roomy small runabout.

 cars.com:
The ECHO arrived last year to replace the Tercel and give Toyota a new low-priced, youth-oriented small car.
The ECHO’s most unusual interior feature is the gauge cluster, which is mounted on top of the dashboard in the middle and angled toward the driver.
Toyota says this location makes the gauges easier to read, though it takes some getting used to because they are farther away than usual.

 2000 Toyota Echo review
But if Toyota was hoping to just jump in and be cool with the Echo, they've got another thing coming -- regardless of how many swank details they add.
Sure the Echo gets good gas mileage, is easy to use, and doesn't pack an engine that could send their kids to the moon.
Rear legroom was impressive, considering the overall tiny-ness of the Echo, and trunk space was aplenty.

Toyota Echo NRMA car review - Motoring - MyNRMA
The base Echo is the three-door hatchback powered by a 1.3 litre engine, followed by the five-door hatch (also with the 1.3 litre engine) and the four-door sedan with a 1.5 litre engine.
Underlining Toyota's global plans for the Echo, is the fact that the hatchback was styled in Europe by a Greek-born stylist.
The Echo hatch is designed to appeal to younger buyers and as such its styling was never going to be bland.

Echo LE is available in both three- and five-door configurations ($13,965 and $14,600, respectively), and adds a 4-speaker stereo, rear wiper and power steering to the CE, plus power locks and rear floor mats on 5-door versions.
Toyota is offering a slew of factory-backed performance and appearance accessories to appeal to the tuner crowd.
All Echo models are powered by a double overhead cam four-banger that displaces 1.5 litres, producing 108 hp at 6,000 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 revs.

Toyota has maximised body rigidity while maintaining weight targets, by placing reinforcements in key locations, adopting straight sections for the main underbody framework and optimising the strength of the joints in the body shell and underbody.
Echo has also met the European dynamic side impact test (where a 950 kilogram moving deformable barrier is slammed into the side of the test vehicle at 55 km/h).

2000 Toyota Echo - The Car Connection
To be sure, the Echo strays far from the status quo in the subcompact segment in the U.S. Technology and Genesis influence aside, the real question is whether it's a car worthy of your consideration.
Styllng is the Achilles heel of the Echo.
Toyota tells us that for the first six weeks the Echo was on sale, the average transaction price of the car was nearly $14,000, the hairy outer edge of economy as we see it.

Test Drive Notes: Toyota Echo 2000
The Echo has a little, 1.5 liter, four-cylinder engine, which is perfectly adequate, given that the whole car weighs barely 2,000 pounds.
Otherwise, the fit and finish of the Echo were up to Toyota's usual high standards, meaning the only use for the warranty booklet will be as a shim for your dining room table.
Toyota has made 1.5 liter engines for years, and there's no reason why this one shouldn't be as reliable as all of Toyota's engines.

CanadianDriver: Test Drive - 2003 Toyota Echo sedan
When the Toyota Echo went on sale in 2000, it was a common joke that anyone who sat inside the sub-compact would love it, but the only way they would ever get inside an Echo was if they were led blindfolded to the car.
But Toyota was sensitive to feedback from the buying public about the Echo's looks and, for the 2003 model year, revised the front and rear of the car.
I had a chance to place the new Echo sedan beside a 2000 model for a close up comparison and, while the differences are obvious, I can't say that the new look makes the Echo that much more appealing, although it is an improvement.

2001 Toyota Echo Sportivo - Road tests - CARSguide
Toyota says the cars are the start of a new sub-brand in its mainstream family, aimed at younger buyers who want more from their compact cars without the premium price tags of the Celica and the MR2.
The recipe for Echo Sportivo is simple: Toyota Australia took the 1.5-litre engine from the Echo sedan and dropped it into the hatches, then added plenty of dress-up gear to give it the essential street cred.
Toyota emphasises the basic $19,990 price for a three-door manual Echo Sportivo, but there is also a five-door model and an optional safety pack at $1220 for anti-skid brakes, a passenger-side airbag and seat belt pre-tensioners.

Meanwhile, the Echo can easily accommodate a pair of adults in the rear seat, though parents may find it difficult to install bulky child safety seats.
The Toyota Echo does have a couple of advantages in cramped urban settings, as its small size makes it easy to park in tight spaces, while its soft suspension does a fair job of filtering out bumps and ruts.
