Toyota Technological Institute of Nagoya, Japan, will create a department of information science on the University campus that will begin offering classes in fall 2003, officials at the two universities have announced.
TTI, one of Japan’s leading technological universities, was established in 1981 through an endowment from the Toyota Motor Corp. Currently on the Nagoya campus, 79 faculty members offer programs in materials science and engineering, mechanical systems engineering, and electronics and information science to 320 undergraduates and 84 graduate students.
The Japanese institute will set aside a fund of $100 million for its new Computer Science Department in Chicago, and the interest accrued from this will be used exclusively for the new department.

The first faculty members of Chicago’s newest academic institution, the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago, have arrived to begin their computer science research.
The new TTI at Chicago, supported by a $100 million fund set aside in Japan, will be a boon both for the city and the University of Chicago, Randel said.
TTI was established in Japan in 1981 as a social contribution by the Toyota Motor Corporation.

What is TTI-C? The Toyota Technological Institute, a university covering various engineering disciplines located in Nagoya City, Japan, was founded in 1981 from funds from the Toyota Motor Corporation as directed by the Toyoda family.
They decided to start a computer science department and locate it in the states to have a broader access to computer science faculty and students.
Although there will be some sharing of courses and a few of our faculty (including myself) sit on a Local Academic Advisory Council for TTI-C, TTI-C will formally maintain itself as a separate institution from the University.
