Cross-town rivals: Holden vs Mitsubishi - Top Stories - CARSguide storypage
In powerplant terms, the 380 throws its punches with a 3.8-litre single overhead cam V6 engine with four valves per cylinder, while a 3.6-litre all-alloy V6 has the same number of valves but double overhead cams drive the SV6.
Where the 380 makes up a little ground on the Holden is in torque – 343Nm at 4000rpm (DIN) for the 380 versus 340Nm (ECE) a little lower in the rev range, at 3200rpm.
Ford uses the DIN standard for power and torque measurements, and Toyota uses SAE for the Camry, so it will come down to a seat-of-the-pants feel if these four are on your shopping list.

Holden's full-sized car has a new V6 engine but while better in every way it's not the great leap forward that might have been expected when a 2004 design replaces a 1962 one.
While clearly more refined than the old engine, it lacks the aural crispness of the similarly configured engines in the Toyota Camry and Mitsubishi Magna – and it's not leagues ahead of the straight six in the BA Falcon, another engine which can trace roots back to the early 1960s.
One useful standard feature on the trip computer of all VZ models is a digital speedo with large letters 2cm high.

For all the VZ's engine and transmission work, it's those small changes to the Commodore's front suspension that are most immediately noticeable when driving the new car.
But the big news for VZ is the Alloytec engine itself, which replaces the hoary old OHV 3.8-litre unit that was first used by the VN Commodore 15 years ago.
In the VZ Commodore, the Alloytec is a real smoothie, slurring especially well through the new five-speed automatic transmission, but also matching up more than satisfactorily with the Aisin six- speed manual gearbox.

Designing the mechanical parts is easy, the know how has been around for as long as the camshaft.
But they would still have to figure out how the ECU was designed, and work out how to replicate the technology in a way that was compatable with thier own engines, and then they would have to design a cylinder head and block combination that suit the requirments of a variable lift cam.
In an enigne with variable cam timing you should not notice any change over point as the cam timing is continuosly adjusted as the engine changes rpm.

HOLDEN will replace the trusty but tired V6 that has powered Commodore since mid-1988 with not one, but two all-new Australian-made V6s in August, when the facelifted VZ Commodore is launched.
Holden is also yet to reveal details of the V8 engine and transmission line-up for VZ and WL models.
While the reveal of Holden’s two-tiered V6 engine and (auto) transmission strategy disproves some media theories that Commodore would continue exclusively with either its current four-speed auto or a locally-built unit similar to the sequential-shift four-speed auto found in Falcon, it could also prove to have valuable marketing and cost-saving advantages.
