Tracey Thorn - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: One of the most enduring English singer/songwriters since the early '80s, Tracey Thorn began making music with the all-female quartet Marine Girls, a minimalist pop group that released a pair of albums -- Beach Party and Lazy Ways -- inspired by Young Marble Giants and the Raincoats.
She recorded A Distant Shore, a relatively moody, if similarly skeletal solo album, for Cherry Red in 1983, and around that time she met Ben Watt -- who was also signed to Cherry Red -- and formed a partnership as Everything But the Girl.
From 1984 through 1999, Thorn and Watt released ten albums that shifted from indie pop to slick sophisti-pop to downtempo club music.

Tracey Thorn and producer Ewan Pearson on recording Out of the Woods | Remix interviews Tracy Thorn and Ewan Pearson ...
Two years ago, Tracey Thorn emerged from half a decade of maternal bliss to record vocals for German duo-of-the-moment Tiefschwarz, then slipped away just as quickly as she came.
As for Thorn, she realized that her music carries a somewhat '80s vibe only after others pointed it out.
It certainly helps that Thorn feels no inclination to shape her music according to outside pressure, be it from record companies or the current musical climate.

Everything but the Girl's Tracey Thorn goes solo in 'Out of the Woods' - Music - NY Daily News
Tracey Thorn, lead singer of Everything But the Girl, is releasing her first solo album in 25 years.
Thorn spent the time since EBTG's last CD (1999's "Temperamental") raising the twins she gave birth to in 1998, along with a child she had in 2001.
Thorn may not match it on "Out of the Woods," but she does feature sad ruminations like "A-Z," which deals with kids who've been gay-bashed, or "By Piccadilly Station I Sat Down and Wept," a crushing ode to a lost love.

Tracey serves notice on the opener "Here It Comes Again" that, in fact, the same old thing you might have expected from her is not coming again at all.
In my opinion, Tracey Thorn is the anti-Annie Lennox (who I love) in that whenever given the option to go over the top with her vocal performance she chooses to be underwrought, delicate, wistful and just plain lovely - all hallmarks of quality singing we don't find often in these post-Celine Dion days.
Thorn's vocals remain enchanting but the disco, techno-tinged beats sound dated and cheesy, adding fuel to the suspicion that the whole retro vibe is starting to sound stale.

A Distant Shore is Tracey Thorn's 1982 solo album, and although she was already in Everything But The Girl, the album is closer in spirit to the lilting charm of her earlier band, the Marine Girls.
Yet as surely as Thorn's voice is her calling card, it hampers her with an exceedingly narrow range--as exhibited on A Distant Shore's cover of the Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale." It's hard to imagine a female whose comfort zone for singing is smaller than Nico's.

Tracey Thorn - Out Of The Woods : album review
Thorn's voice will always be a thing of undimmed charm and emotion, but the gulf between the music styles on display here, which flick from 70's disco, piano ballads and electro-pop seem like trying to keep a foot in both camps of the simpler days of her youth, and the ‘hip' dance crowd.
Her voice is always suited to the more downbeat / downtempo tracks rather than the clubland tracks which are as anonymous as the genre could be.
Likewise the scope and hymn-like quality of Nowhere Near with its muted horns and stately piano of "how it is when love forgets to speak its name" is a beautiful, heartfelt glimpse of domestic life and its bewilderment.

Tracey Thorn's solo album sounds pretty much like what it is--a transition from the ramshackle Marine Girls to the much more sophisticated Everything but the Girl.
Before Tracey Thorn established herself with Everything but the Girl, she produced mellow, spare indie pop with the all-female act the Marine Girls.
Inspired by the Raincoats and the Young Marble Giants, Thorn formed the Marine Girls with her schoolmate Gina and Jane Fox in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, in 1980.

In 1982, Thorn and Watt were Hull University students, both signed to the southern indie Cherry Red though, amazingly, they hadn't met.
Thorn cut A Distant Shore, intended as demos to send to her then-current band The Marine Girls back home in London, on a four-track in a mate's shed for £138.
Thorn, however, was always the stronger half, and few EBTG records have matched Distant Shore for its heart-wrenching tenderness and uncluttered sincerity.

Producer Ewan Pearson occasionally falters in connecting her vocals with the arrangements; there's a nice engagement on the slower, non-beat-driven tracks that you wish he'd mastered on the clubbier cuts.
At this point in her career, Thorn shouldn't be courting the middle, and considering the best moments on Out of the Woods, she didn't have to, either.
