Track & Field (arcade game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Track and Field is the name of a series of Olympic themed video games developed by Konami for several platforms since 1982.
The first title, simply called Track and Field (Hyper Olympic outside the United States) was released in 1983 as an arcade game.
Track and Field helped to popularize the button-mashing style of gameplay, in which a player must hit a button on their controller as fast and as many times as possible in order to make their in-game athlete move quicker.

Gamasutra - Features - "Track and Field Game Mechanics" [10.18.02]
Track and field games, however, have not undergone the same path of evolution.
While racing games are often developed by people with a strong interest in motor sports and cars, I strongly doubt that the developers of track and field games have had either a strong interest in the sport of track and field or the biomechanics and technical execution of the events.
As the game should be sprite based, none of the 3D track and field games inspired me and, in addition their animation was not really realistic.

Articles on computer and video games should not list extensive minutiae or give a detailed description of how to play the game : these topics should be moved to a gaming wiki, such as StrategyWiki for gameplay information and walkthrough content, or Encyclopedia Gamia for general information/trivia.
Arcade, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, MSX, ZX Spectrum
While not quite achieving the commercial and critical success of Track and Field, Hyper Sports still proved to be very popular among gamers and, like its prequel, really came into its own as a highly addictive multi-player experience.

This version of Track & Field allows for four players at once, each with their own control layout.
When restored, this game will have a new 19" monitor installed, new power supply, new t-molding, a refinished coin door, new monitor glass and new control panel artwork, among other things.
This game was released just before the 1984 Olympics, and is still popular today due to its very physical nature: you have to "pound" the buttons as quickly as possible to make your character run as fast as he can.

Gamasutra - Features - "Track and Field Game Mechanics" Printer Friendly
Games with a comical graphical style like the original Track and Field can get away with this but it would clash very badly with an otherwise realistic animation.
In other track and field games meters of different kinds are introduced to provide for timed presses and this undoubtedly weakens the link between the animated athlete and the player.
He was later given the finished game and begun to play it obsessively at home and started to experiment with different innovative techniques and external tools of assistance (this alone and the problems associated with it would make up an article of its own).

AtariProtos.com - All Your Protos Are Belong To Us!
Atari solved the joystick problem by including a special controller with Track and Field that had buttons to simulate left and right (as was done in the arcade game).
Track and Field solved this problem by having almost the same events minus all the repetitive running events, this made it appeal to a wider audience (especially given that game players aren't known for their long attention spans).
In Track & Field players not only have to run as fast as they can, but they also have to set up the angle at which they want to jump/throw at.

One Track and Field game has already been released for the PlayStation, but it was released to an audience that really didn't care about the game.
The tracks and fields they compete on also look fairly convincing and are filled with cameramen, trainers, and spectators.
Overall, International Track and Field 2000 is a fun and entertaining game, although its simple gameplay, while addicting at first, has a very short shelf life for a single player.

 Track & Field series: Nostalgia
Borrowing that film’s famous theme for its attract mode music, Konami’s Track and Field brought six Olympic events to the arcade in a single game, one that was a bit of a workout itself.
Each of the game’s events was controlled with a pair of “Run” buttons, which had to be hit in rapid succession to make your character run faster (later versions of the game used a trackball instead).
Track and Field’s Olympic tie-in and manic button mashing were appealing enough, but the bright minds at Konami made the game even more attractive by highlighting “World Records” in each event.

D.G. It may be a little too easy to criticise Konami for this one, but they've ceratinly missed the boath with their 'official' version of Track and Field.
It must be admitted that the game is enjoyable, but to be honest I'd much sooner spend money on Firebird's Decathlon or Americana's Go For The Gold, which both offer more events and variety for over five pounds less.

Jack that age bracket up a notch and you'll meet people who never knew games before the Nintendo NES invaded the homes of America, and who've never clutched a shiny quarter in a grubby hand, waiting desperately for their chance at the joystick.
As I got older, the better the games got and and the more time I spent in an arcade, the more likely it seemed that I'd found my reason for existing; the one thing that I'd be doing for all my days.
The arcade near the movie theater was always good for a few games of Cyberball, Street Fighter or Xenophobe with friends, arcade titles that forged the path for all of the multiplayer (massively and otherwise) games to follow.

 International Track and Field 2000
Just like the old Track and Field arcade game, this version features a set of progressively more difficult events that test how quickly players can press two buttons in rapid succession, and their timing for pressing a third button.
Actually, this game isn't quite as good as that classic game, because the arcade controls featured big, springy arcade machine buttons to press, while the PlayStation controller features small, shock-absorbing buttons utterly unsuited for this type of gameplay.
Arcade gamers who want to relive that old experience with updated graphics should buy this game only if they own or plan to buy an arcade stick controller for their PlayStation.

The Vs. System arcade machines are single unit game machines, with a modified version of the NES game the game being modified into a real arcade game.
These games are different from their NES or Playchoice counterparts, in that the games are ported over into real arcade games, and they play just like any other arcade games.
And unlike the Playchoice games, there is no timer that decides how long you play, in these games you play effects how long you can play etc. Therefore, these games differ a fair amount from the original NES games (though are still roughly the same in terms of the game itself).

Of these, 0 of them are original dedicated machines, 0 of them are conversions in which game circuit boards have been placed in another game cabinet, and 7 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.
Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.
Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector.

The controls on Track and Field consisted of buttons which you had to punch rapid-fire to achieve your running speed.
As such, the game was somewhat tiring to play physically (a bit of a rarity with video games!), but it was a real rush - again, especially if you were competing against another person instead of the machine.
Frequent Konami licensee Atari did get around to adapting Track and Field for the Atari 2600, along with a special controller to simulate the arcade's button-heavy action, but since this wasn't released until the twilight of Atari as a game manufacturer, it wasn't very common.
