Bodybuilding.com - Mitch Hodge - Supplemental Training: Track Running!
Running really was and is difficult for me, especially mixing mid distances with sprint work.
I love to sprint, run distances (to actually finish distances is closer to the truth), run hills and any other track affiliated work.
My long term goals in track are a 4.6 second 40, a 12 second 100 meters, a 60 second 400 meters, and a six minute mile.

Running training is essential to developing your endurance and muscles, allowing your body to go that extra step and many more after.

 Halfbakery: Custard Running Track
Olympic running tracks are usually composed of tartan (not the Scottish type), but this material has some unwanted properties that could possibly be circumvented by replacing the surface with custard.
Who wouldn't love to have a go running on a surface that appears to be liquid until the force of one's foot falling upon it turns it temporarily to a solid (or semi-solid, at least).
Also, in order for this to work, a short non-custard section of track would be needed at the start of the course, thus allowing runners to build up the speed needed to turn the liquid custard into a solid capable of supporting their weight.

Generally speaking, the longest race high school boys are going to run on the track is 3200 meters or two miles, and so essentially the high school distance coach is training runners to race the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m.
This is not always precise, but a coach generally knows what a runner might be capable of running, especially if he or she may have coached the kid for two, three or four years.
You don't want that kid to be running intervals at 100% of his date pace (i.e., don't have him run 3 X 1600m @ 5:00; if you run 3 X 1600m you'll have him run them at 5:20 5:16 5:12).
