Traction motor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Traction motor typically refers to those motors that are used to power the driving wheels of a railroad locomotive, electrical multi-unit train (such as a subway or light rail vehicle train), or a tram.
Usually, the traction motor is simply suspended between the truck (bogie) frame and the driven axle; this is referred to as a "nose-suspended traction motor".
By mounting the relatively-heavy traction motor directly to the power unit rather than to the truck (bogie), better dynamics are obtained allowing much-improved high-speed operation.

Electric motor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The modern DC motor was invented by accident in 1873, when Zénobe Gramme connected a spinning dynamo to a second similar unit, driving it as a motor.
The speed of the motor is proportional to the voltage, and the torque is proportional to the current.
Synchronous motors are occasionally used as traction motors; the TGV may be the best-known example of such use.

 [No title]
The traction motor is the sturdy insulated metal frame along with the armature and the commutator which turns in reaction to the electrical field supplied by the armature.
As stated previously a traction motor with wheels weighs in at 10,400 lbs which is why 25 ton and 50 ton heavy duty suspended electrical cranes are a necessity for the tear down operation.
Once the wheel set and traction motor become a single unit grease is applied to the gears in the form of 14 1lb bags of "Texaco TM Gear Lube- Heavy" which are dropped onto the gear as the traction motor is hooked up to cables and turned.

In particular, a voltage sensor incorporated in generator motor 30 and a voltage sensor in traction motor 38 determine a voltage that is proportional to the magnetization of permanent magnets in generator motor 30 and traction motor 38, as described below.
The permanent magnet induced voltages from traction motor 38 and generator motor 30 are used by controller 100 to determine a state of the permanent magnets contained within traction motor 38 and generator motor 30.
Based on the state of the permanent magnets in traction motor 38 and generator motor 30, controller 100 determines a current provided by inverters 106, 108; determines whether the traction motor 38 or generator motor 30 are operable; and initiates warnings to a user.

A flat bed truck carrying the new traction motor was placed by the truck assembly and the replacement motor with axle and wheels was moved from the truck to the rail tracks.
The frame was lowered onto the traction motor and the crane was connected to the traction motor lifting eyes to lift the motor and rear of the frame as a unit.

Motors are driven by a DC power provided by a generator output power (DC) or other suitable supply.
By replacing the old motor with the Hi-Torque motor, confirming that the power source has adequate current capacity and resetting the current limits to the higher values, more power is available for drilling, circulating and hoisting.

The direct-current traction motor proved to be as well-adapted to railway traction as the steam locomotive, giving high torque at low speeds and not requiring elaborate transmission mechanisms.
The traction circuit was completed from the contact wire through the trolley pole and the motorman's platform controller to the traction motors beneath the car, and then through the wheels to the rails.
The motors were series motors, meaning that the current passed through the stationary field windings to produce the magnetic field, then through the moving armature windings where the magnetic field produced the torque.

The electrical power is routed from the DC generator on the older units to traction motors, usually 1 per axle, which are wired in series, parallel, or series-parallel depending on the throttle notch.
When a motor is turned by the momentum of the train, it will produce power which is then dissipated by heating grids on the top of the locomotive similar to those in an electric toaster.
On all locomotives with AC traction motors, whatever their power source: be it from a AC catenary system on an electric locomotive; or the AC alternator on modern Diesel-electric locomotives; they all rectified and regulated this power to a DC buss refered to as the DC Link.

In railway traction terms, a quill drive is where a hollow shaft is placed round the driving axle and the motor drives the quill rather than driving the axle as it does with a nose suspended drive.
The motor is fully suspended in the bogie frame and drives both axles through the gear train, which is contained in a single, large, oil filled gearcase (not shown).
The efficiency of the linear motor is about 60% of the conventional motor but it has the advantage of less moving parts and it does not have the reliance on adhesion of the conventional motor.

TGVweb - "Under the Hood" of a TGV
Between the pantograph and the traction motors of a TGV there is a whole set of power electronics with the task of "processing" a fixed voltage at the (single-phase AC or DC) catenary to produce a variable force at the wheel treads.
The traction motors are still located where one would expect them: in between the truck (bogie) frames, level with the axles, but just suspended differently.
Mechanical transmission: the output shaft of the motor is connected to the axle gearbox by a tripod transmission, using sliding cardan (universal-joint) shafts.

Direct Current Traction Motor Systems   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The DC motor was the mainstay of electric traction drives on both electric and diesel-electric for many years.
The motor works because, simply put, when a current is passed through the motor circuit, there is a reaction between the current in the field and the current in the armature which causes the armature to turn.
Since the DC motor and a DC generator are virtually the same machine mechanically, it was immediately realised that a train could use its motors to act as generators and that this would provide some braking effect if a suitable way could be found to dispose of the energy.

As the motor turns, the commutator on the shaft turns and the brushes apply power to the "segmented commutator" so current flows in such a way for an angular rotation of the motor so that the magnetic field in the rotor is constantly "pushing" against the magnetic field in the stator coil(s)...
A DC motor has two 'electromagnets.' One is fixed and doesn't move (the field.) The other rotates on an axle inside (the armature.) At the end of the armature is a set of contacts called the commutator.
When DC power is applied to the traction motor, the field is a fixed magnet and the armature is repelled.

As long as the wheels have the same traction, side thrust is zero and torque split is even.
But when a wheel (sun gear) slows for a turn or loses traction, torque is reduced on that sun gear but multiplied by the side thrust of the planet gears and applied to the other wheel.
Tiffs type of differential is commonly used in vehicles that use ABS for electronic traction control and also as the center differential in full-time four-wheel drive.
