Tractor configuration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An aircraft constructed with a tractor configuration has the engine mounted with the propeller facing forwards such that the aircraft is "pulled" through the air, as opposed to the pusher configuration in which the propeller faces backwards and the aircraft is "pushed" through the air.
However, by the mid-point of the First World War, interests in pushers declined and the tractor configuration dominated such that today all propeller-driven aircraft are assumed to be tractors.
From a military perspective, the problem with single-engine tractor aircraft was that it was not originally possible to fire a gun through the propeller arc without striking the propeller blades with bullets.

Tractor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.netlab.uky.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The classic farm tractor is a simple open vehicle, with two very large driving wheels on an axle below and slightly behind a single seat (the seat and steering wheel consequently are in the center), and the engine in front of the driver, with two steerable wheels below the engine compartment.
Older tractors usually require that the operator depress the clutch in order to shift between gears (a limitation of straight-cut gears in the gearbox), but many modern tractors have eliminated this requirement with the introduction of technologies such as power shifting in the 1960's and more modern continuously variable transmissions.
Some farm-type tractors are found elsewhere than on farms: with large universities' gardening departments, in public parks or for highway workman use with blowtorch cylinders strapped to its sides and a pneumatic drill air compressor permanently fastened over its power take-off.

Each pair of tractors is mounted on a continuous cable loop arranged in a figure-eight configuration such that when one of the tractors is moved, the other tractor will move the same distance in the same direction as the first tractor while maintaining relative alignment with respect to the first tractor.
Tractors 2 and 3, are slidably mounted on metal rod 7 and on shaft 9; tractors 4 and 5 are slidably mounted on metal rod 6 and on shaft 8.
Tractor pair 2 and 4 are fixedly attached to cable loop 10 and tractor pair 3 and 5 are fixedly attached to cable loop 11.

 Types of Tractors
In Britain the word "tractor" usually means "farm tractor", and using "tractor" to mean other types of vehicles is known of in the vehicle trade but unfamiliar to much of the general public.
The farm tractor is used for pulling agricultural machinery or trailers, for ploughing, harrowing and similar tasks.
loader tractors were created by removing the blade and substituting a large volume bucket and hydraulic arms which can raise and lower the bucket, thus making it useful for scooping up earth, rock and similar loose material to load it into trucks.

Tractor Accessory Accident Attorney John Gehlhausen - Danger in The Fields
As early as 1949, it was recognized by the tractor manufacturing industry that because of the many positions and situations in which tractors are used, efforts to mechanically prevent them from rolling over were futile, and the only effective way to protect the operators was installing protective roll guards.
Despite the fact that U.S. tractor manufacturers were aware as early as the mid-1950’s of what was happening in other parts of the world regarding tractor overhead protection, and that their tractors were being sold in Sweden with roll guards after July of 1959.
Tractor advertising brochures of the manufacturer after 1966 (when roll bars began to be marketed by the tractor manufacturers) should be requested even if they are not of the particular model in question.

Here, a naturally aspirated 1468 tractor is mislabeled and the caption calls the tractor a 1468 Turbo, and although it never indicates whether the tractor had one or two turbos?in fact it had none.

Air Tractor Lowers the Boom on Spray Drift   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
This configuration is achieved by using extended boom hangers that drop the boom 9 inches below the standard configuration, which places it below the step.
Leland Snow, Air Tractor President, said the lowered boom system is the latest development to "give operators a way to spray more precisely, with less drift, so that more chemicals go where they're intended to go, instead of outside the spray line or into the atmosphere.
Air Tractor's new lowered boom is now available as an option on all new Air Tractors, and in the form of a retrofit kit for existing models.

Aircraft engineering - Pusher Vs Tractor configuration
By contrast, in the pusher configuration the propeller is in the fuselage's slipstream, so the air velocity at the leading edge is slightly less uniform than in the tractor configuration due to drag effects from the fuselage.
The slipstream issue with tractor vs pusher configuration is less of an issue with low power flight such as motor gliders and self launching gliders.
The pusher configuration resulted from the desire, again, to improve passenger comfort by removing the props from the vicinity of the cabin.

 RV PROFILE
The RV's "traditional" configuration; tractor engine, monoplane, stabilizer in the rear, is an exercise in logic, not simply a concession to convention.
Ironically, the reason for this is the same as given as the benefit of the pusher configuration; that of keeping the fuselage, inboard wings, and tail surface out of the propeller stream.
Without the accelerated airflow from the tractor propeller over these surfaces, some lift and controllability is lost, thus requiring a higher landing speed for any given wing loading.
