Tracy was also a twelve time NCAA champion for the University of Florida and was a member of the Gators National Championship team of 1982.

She won her first titles in 1977, the AAU national 100- and 200-yard short-course breaststroke events and the 200- and 400-meter long-course individual medleys.
Caulkins became the youngest person ever to win the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete in 1978, when she took world championships in the 200-meter butterfly and both individual medleys, as well as a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Although Caulkins won both individual medleys at the 1983 Pan-American Games, her times were considerable slower than they had been two or three years earlier, and there were doubts about whether she could claim any gold medals at the 1984 Olympics.
